Aftermarket wheel offset selection guide

Hi Lads,

There's countless posts here by people not understanding offsets, and asking what offset is ideal for aftermarket wheels, so I thought I'd put two and two together to offer a guide.

The first step is to look at the thread which IND spacers put together and work out the ideal amount of poke for you:

https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1808816

Note, I have no affiliation with them or any merchant, I'm posting it as a reference as its a very well put together and helpful thread - props to the IND guys for the time they took.

Just keep in mind if you plan on running a 20 inch wheel at the front, the more aggressive offsets (lower ET number) may give you clearance issues with the inner guards. There's plenty of talk here on what to do about that - most people that rub, trim them.

Step 1 is to decide how aggressive you want to go, step 2 is selecting your wheel width to achieve that look.

Also note, that if you follow this guide you shouldn't have clearance issues unless you go crazy with tyre width on a given rim size. The guide assumes tyres are well matched to rim width.

*Only caveat is the equivalent to an 18mm spacer on the back, I think these offsets could be too much when lowered on the rear.

If you like the look of 5mm spacers on factory rims, your offset for aftermarket wheels should be:

Front:
9.5 inch rim - ET15
10 inch rim -ET21

Rear:

10.5 inch rim - ET15
11 inch rim - ET21

If you like the look of 12mm spacers on factory rims, your offset for aftermarket wheels should be:

Front:
9.5 inch rim - ET8
10 inch rim - ET14
10.5 inch rim - ET20 (note this will have very little clearance inside)

Rear:
10.5 inch rim - ET8
11 inch rim - ET14

If you like the look of 15mm spacers on factory rims, your offset for aftermarket wheels should be:

Front:
9.5 inch rim - ET5
10 inch rim - ET11
10.5 inch rim - ET17

Rear:
10.5 inch rim - ET5
11 inch rim - ET11

If you like the look of 18mm spacers on factory rims, your offset for aftermarket wheels should be:

Front:
10 inch rim - ET8
10.5 inch rim - ET14

Rear:
10.5 inch rim - ET2
11 inch rim - ET8 (outer guard clearance may be an issue if running a 295 - 305 sized tyre.

Interesting, I now have 15/13 spacers and like the look. I am going with 285/295 20 inch and 10/11 for wheels. I like the look and poke my tires have but should I adjust for rim and tire size? Will not lower car...

I would think if I was going to spend $5-$10K on a set of wheels, I wouldn't want any spacers. Why would you want to install spacers, if you were getting a custom set of wheels, for your car?

LOL...thats about what I'm looking for. The only reason I'm thinking of wheels is I'm hating cleaning my wheels. I should just lower it and don't waste 4k on wheels.

Get some HRE 305s. I've seen a few sets on G8Xs.

I think you have misunderstood the purpose of the guide. Running aftermarket wheels + spacers would be silly, it is not encouraging that - quite the opposite.

The spacers thread is referenced simply so you can decide how you want your car to look after you put aftermarket wheels on it - without spacers.

Once you decide how much (or how little) poke you want, you decide on your wheel width, then you match the offset number.

For example, if I love the look of 15mm spacers (on stock rims) at the front and want 10 inch front rims I'd go ET11.

If I plan on putting 11 inch wheels on the rear and like the look of 12mm spacers at the rear, I'd go ET14.

There are so many posts here from people asking about fitment and aftermarket rims, so the guide helps them match the offset they need to achieve the look they want

As per the guide above you would look under the following headings:

If you like the look of 15mm spacers on factory rims, your offset for aftermarket wheels should be:

Front:
9.5 inch rim - ET5
10 inch rim - ET11

If you like the look of 12mm spacers on factory rims, your offset for aftermarket wheels should be:

Rear:
10.5 inch rim - ET8
11 inch rim - ET14

Damn, can't wait to see them. I want bronze but ambsxarwd I will get tired of the color soon. Never ventured outside of a Siler type wheel ever. My first time with a black wheel and I somewhat regret it. It stays dirty looking and the 826m is a bitch to clean.

Yeah the 826m wheesl are a pain to clean. The HRE 305 will be easier to clean. I will probably swap out my pads at some point to help with the brake dust.

Most definitely, I already did mine when I got my car. I've been happy with the outcome and the dust from pads are about 60% less than oem. This is after one week of driving. Keep in mind, I may put about 200 miles or less on my car weekly. I have multiple vehicles and also work from home most days.

Hey Robert,
What tire sizes are you sticking with? I want to swap my 285 to the front and going with Eibach springs for minimal drop. Wouldn't you have to adjust for wider tire so it will not poke at top of fender or will it still be flush with your et?

They recommended 285/295 Michelin ps4

Thanks mate, yeah I had hoped it was helpful but its taken a while until someone has seen some value in it!

With so many people confused about widths and offsets it should help.

I'm thinking to swap pads before my HRE's arrive. What brand did you go with? Also any difference in braking feel?

I went with Dynamic Friction 3000 brake pads and have been very happy with them. Parts Geek and Buy brakes.com have them. Also Ben at RG Sport has a set of brakes in development I understand will be great also.

To the Original poster @BulkBen

Thanks for posting this. Thus guide is a lifesaver. I am getting wheels, hopefully in the near future and this saved me a ton of time researching the right fitment. I bookmarked and screenshot your post.

Thanks for posting @BulkBen…helpful.

I’m new to aftermarket wheel offsets, but trying to match the ‘look’ of another members setup with a set of wheels I like best that has a ET22 minimum. Hoping you all can check my logic and tell me if the two scenarios will give the same ‘look’:

Front: 20x10.5 ET15 no spacers = 20x10.5 ET22 w/ 7mm spacers?
Rear: 20x10.5 ET15 w/ 10mm spacers = 20x10.5 ET22 w/ 17mm spacers?

Thanks in advance.

Yep, those numbers are correct in that both options will have exactly the same amount of 'poke'.

What tyre are you wanting to put on the front with the 20x10.5 ET15 no spacers?
You should be ok with a 285, but 295 may be pushing it as there isn't much inner clearance from rim / tyre to the strut.

This is very similar offset to what I am about to run, but as I am going a 305 all round for the track I expect I'll need at least a 10mm front spacer.

This is very similar offset to what I am about to run, but as I am going a 305 all round for the track I expect I'll need at least a 10mm front spacer.
My plan is to run 285/30/20 square (2023 M3 XDrive). Thanks for your help.
