M3 Comp xDrive vs. C8 Z51 HTC

I was recently looking for a fun car that was different from previous cars I have owned and stumbled upon an allocation for a G80. I do have a family, so the G80 checks the boxes for being fun, different (AWD), and still practical.

Meanwhile, I have been speaking with a local Chevy dealer about a C8 and he said it would be at least a year and a half out. The dealer recently contacted me and said they have an allocation for me for a '23 C8 and will be submitting the final order this week.

It now looks like both cars should arrive late spring/early summer. I am not interested in keeping them both long term. I am excited to try each of them out though, so I don't want to cancel either of them, even though that might be the most prudent course of action.

Curious if anyone has experience with both of them and what you would recommend. I understand they are completely different, but performance is not too far off. M3 would be used more since I can drive the family around. C8 is much more exotic in looks and feel. I have never owned a mid-engine car or DCT.

TL;DR I have both of these coming in the summer unexpectedly and only plan to keep one. What would you recommend?

I would actually push back on the C8 being more exotic. The novelty is wearing off and they are popping up all over the place. I keep seeing more & more.

Plus, it's a base Corvette. M3/M4 will be more exclusive if that's what you care about.

Skip the C8.
Order Z06.
Drive the M3 until then.
"Until then" = 3 years.

I was on the Z06 forums when the Ciocca fiasco hit. A lot of potential owners quickly learned about bank wire transfer delays; submitting $1000 deposit within 60 seconds wasn't fast enough for most, getting a spot well into the 4 digits.

I think all these lists will be trashed or burned when it's time. Way over MSRP will be the going price. Some peeps think certain dealers will stick to their guns to avoid a " bad rep ". I will believe that when I see it. I don't care what they promised 2 years ahead of time. It's a different world these days. Not in a better way

Lollll good luck. Most places have waitlist that are filled until 2025 for Z06's. I called one place and they wanted a non-refundable deposit of 10k and 50k over MSRP. I laughed and hung up the phone.

They couldn't be more different. Also I wouldn't bother with a base C8. Z06 or nothing.

The vette is a track car for the street and the M3 is a street car that can handle track work. I would get the M3 xDrive and if you end up with enough funds for a certified track toy, then I'd get the vette and add it as a weekender with the M3 as the daily.

I would also do xDrive or nothing for the M3.

O. M. G!!! #11?? I'd be working that into EVERY conversation that didn't even have to do with cars.

"Wow, it's gonna be a great game today."
Me: "Yeah, kickoff is 11 o'clock. You know what else is 11? My Z06 C8 allocation."

If i had the choice and could get the Z06 at msrp which is pretty much the same as a loaded M4C...I would take the Z06. Maybe. Clearly this will out perform a stock M3/4C. The downfall is the C8 interior aggravates me. But I would get over it.

My lightly spec'd z06 was $107K. My lightly spec'd M4CX was muuuuch lower. Thankfully for my wallet I have some restraint spec'ing cars.
In my opinions.... The current C8 looks too narrow and "racer boy" in the color/wheel/specs seen in town. I passed on a handful the past year, some msrp, some 10K adm. Only a few colors make it look classy. Seeing the red with chrome wheels driven by mega old guy has got to make Corvette execs cringe cuz that is exactly NOT their demographic target. Kind of like the M4 side profile, looks like a Mustang in many colors and wheels. The z06, on the other hand, looks so much better from every angle in almost every color and wheel combo. Can you imagine a car market where the lot has 3 z06 at normal negotiating price??

I'll see if I can dig up the news article but the chief of design or someone high up straight up said the interior was on the chopping board for overhaul for the C8s. I'd expect the Z06 and Zora will have the new interiors. Specifically called out was that console button wall, nobody really seems to like it (I hate it myself).

Well, I got the C8 and I think I am sticking with it. Love the car. Well worth a test drive if you haven't experienced one yet.

Thanks for all of the positive responses. The car is almost broken and I will finally be able to open it up soon. And for the "go Z06 or go home" crowd, I think it is going to be a great car and I have secured a very solid place in line for a Z06 with my dealer. No idea how that number will translate into wait time, but it seems promising enough. I am also in line to snag one of the first M2s available, so plenty of fun to be had while I wait.

Beautiful car - congratulations.

Are you still taking delivery of the G80? I’m down to pick up your M3 xDrive if you’re dropping the order.
