Brakes on M240i X drive…..not impressed

Just got the car. So far 500 miles. Is it just me or what. Feel the brakes are not up to BMW standard. I don’t have the extra cooling wheel package but not sure if the brakes are any different. Interested to hear from members what their take on the brakes and if it is worth upgrading. I also can not find the specs of the brakes so I would appreciate sharing info if known.

When you say "...worth upgrading" I hope you're referring to the pads/fluid, which is a relatively inexpensive upgrade, and not the calipers. Pads/fluid can make all the difference in the world.

My X2M35i brakes were so much better IMO.

That's my initial reaction since I just got my car but give me a couple hundred miles and we'll see how I feel then.

It’s my wife’s car so I haven’t had time to push it yet so I have no idea of time to fade or performance under braking from triple digits but in normal driving the bite is more agressive than my F80 M3. It’s also smooth and linear.

Interesting that you say that. I felt the bite is not as I am used to as in my past BMWs. Maybe they need more break in ?

Maybe or perhaps a sub par batch of pads that has been corrected, ours was built in December.

Yea, I've been very underwhelmed with the breaks. I'm past break in at 1200 miles and my mom's 2015 x1 msport with baby breaks has more bite and response to breaking. (I did change the breaks myself a few months ago, so they are new too). The m240i breaks feel super soft and have a lot more travel to engage compared to previous bmws where you barely tap them and you stop. I expected more from M sport breaks.

To reinforce your statement, I find it more needed than not to press on the brakes more firmly than in my previous BMWs in order to engage the auto braking

I agree the brakes are a let down, soft long travel pedal before they bite. My wife’s RDX has a more linear feel I thought it was because it was new and needed bedding in but 1500 miles later they are just the same. They definitely don’t inspire confidence compared to the performance of the car.

Car and driver tested the 70-0 braking on both the 2022 m240i and the M2. The M2 did it in 151 feet and the m240i did it in 153. Some better tires and some track compound brake pads could easily get the m240i into the high 140 feet stopping range. Not a bad result for a car targeted for daily driver enthusiasts IMO.

thanks for this info. I am getting suspicious that there "may" be an issue with the pads in "some production" cars. It seems that the feedback from various drivers on the brakes is either good, excellent or not so good.

This appears in the accessory parts catalogue on the web site. It seems to be ordered not from factory and can be installed from the dealership?

I am sure the value is very high. Any OEM M part is. Just a thought.

Does anyone know the brake pad part numbers? I want to upgrade the pads for track use of course only on the track. What about SS brake hoses?

I would love to upgrade. Maybe in 1-2 yes from now. Can't go wrong with OEM if you can afford

I continue to feel like the brakes are incredibly strong. Maybe too aggressive on initial bite even.

It would be valuable to compare one of the cars people think have weak brakes with another car. Maybe go for a test drive with a dealer car and see if you notice a difference.

Does yours have track handling pack?

Possible but i doubt it, i think it is more a matter of different driver's frame of reference and expectations. They may be "strong" compared to their previous vehicle, or "soft" relative to their previous vehicle.
Mine feel soft but it is in comparison to a much lighter previous vehicle that had the factory brake upgrade option (GTI). And that all may be perceptual as I have no idea of the actual breaking distance discrepancy between the two, but the feel is definitely different, a lot of it likely due to a much heavier car.

I think you mean the high performance cooling and tire option ZTK. No, I do not.

I have the high performance package and the front brakes are bigger including the rotors. I have no complaints on the brake feel and my previous car was also an F80 M3. I think the standard brakes are not suitable for the cars performance imo.

Can you please take a photo of your performance brakes? There is no option in my region to add these so I am hoping we have them as standard. 👍

Yup, we need some specifics here, what size are your rotors, front and rear, what about calipers, have you verified they are "bigger" than stock. (note: i would like to have it verified the size of the rotors and calipers of the ZTK package since there is no mention of brakes in the description, yet i have come to believe the front rotors are larger (374MM?) yet calipers are the same. So can folks with that option verify?
