door lock harness broken from factory

had my car all of 2 days, then discovered that the driver's side door doesn't lock. its been at service for over 10 days now. the harness seems to have been pinned wrong. service overnighted a replacement from germany and the replacement came the same way.

things are escalating up to engineers in germany...

timeline from my build was

2021/08/14 - Ordered
2021/08/28 - Allocation
2021/09/29 - Scheduled for Production
2021/10/15 - Production Begins
2021/10/27 - Exterior Assembly
2021/10/27 - Paint Booth
2021/11/02 - Entering Assembly Line
2021/11/02 - Assembly in Progress
2021/11/02 - Quality Check
2021/11/10 - Final Assembly
2021/11/10 - Ready for Transport
2021/11/10 - Awaiting Carrier Assignment
2021/11/11 - Dispatched from Factory
2021/11/15 - At the Port
2021/11/20 - In Transit (Virgo Leader, Oxnard Vehicle Processing Center 2021/12/17)
2021/12/08 - Panama Canal - Miraflores Locks on Pacific side of canal
2021/12/17 - Docked at Port Hueneme
2021/12/18 - At the Port
2021/12/19 - Released to Carrier. Expected at Dealer on 2021/12/27 (update from Genius)
2021/12/26 - In Transit
2021/12/29 - At Dealership
2021/12/30 - Delivered

anyone else having similar issues? seems like it could be a bad batch of parts.. but i can't be the only one, especially if the replacement part also came pinned incorrectly.

Is the connector overmolded and preventing them from re-pinning the harness? This seems like a pretty basic thing to troubleshoot and repair vs. having to wait weeks for a harness and engineers.

service has offered to re-pin, but BMW engineers asked them to hold off, there is some concern that its more than a re-pinning.. sigh

yea, but the replacement harness service had overnight shipped from germany, had the same incorrect pinning

also the the fact that none of this was found in quality control, ports, dealer check-in, etc, the drivers side door does not lock, period. lol. some real good QA

Engineers can be the worst at actually getting stuff accomplished.

Source: I am an engineer who leads engineers in getting stuff accomplished.

This shouldn't be anything a tech with a multimeter and a few tools can't figure out and fix. Hopefully they get it sorted out for you soon! I'd be steaming.

These days nothing surprises me, no one is themselves anymore, even usually competent people. Hopefully soon it will be a distant memory for you. Look at the bright side, it is not something mechanical where they have to gut the car.

I had my car about a week and the passenger door harness came disconnected, somehow, and nothing on my drivers side door panel worked. Took it in, and I felt like an idiot when they told me it was just unplugged. At the time the only thing that had been done to my car. Was window tint and I watched them do it through their shop window. No one removed my door panels for tint. Not sure what happened. Service plugged it back in, and didn't charge me. Problem hasn't been back, since.

going on 3rd week with no car (had the car for 2 days).

so some horrible news. service re-pinned the harness and stuff still didn't work. still waiting on response from bmw germany. trying to open a case with BMW north america, but unsure who to call or email. my call this morning to BMW usa customer relations seemed just be putting my call into notes field on my profile..

the fact that re-pinning didn't work scares me, seems like something is royally f'd with the assembly.

does anyone know how i get a real BMW customer case opened?

That really sucks OP and BMW should compensate you for this. I am curious how and when they can get this sorted for you. Best of luck.

Why are they holding your car hostage? It's not like its not drivable. I drove my car for like 800 miles with a broken passenger side door panel. No lighting, no power lock, window switch not working. And you would think if they had another car there, they would either cannibalize parts from it, or at least take it apart to see whats wrong with yours.

Hopefully they didn't just move the pin over. They need to trace the wires and understand the actual pin functions on both sides of that connection.

Good luck with that, seriously. When my previous F30 was in the shop for weeks, I called BMW. They made me feel like I was privileged to even get a loaner from the dealer. Maybe if I escalated and made a big fuss I would have been able to get something, who knows, but it was not worth the time/effort/frustration for me.

yea, all said, i just want my car, in the 2 days i had it, it was exactly everything i hoped and more.

the car is "drivable", but it does not lock, there are quite a few homeless people in Boulder and they will go down a street trying to open any car, etc. Not worth the hassle.

also i have to consider, if i take the car and bring it back and forth, each time they have to remove the door panels and windows, i have frozen paint and have a full PPF scheduled, but don't want to take until things are resolved. i have to consider colorado's lemon law at some point, especially if there is no progress. i dont want to get too far ahead of myself here tho. i want my car fixed and returned to me ASAP

Thanks to KnightedBMW I was able to get a call back from BMW NA today. At first seems hopeless, like they were asking me what they were supposed to do, they don't have contacts for BMW germany.. I was like, well i certainly don't either. Eventually, they found my case with BMW germany, promise to give me updates ASAP and on Jan 26th if i don't hear sooner. He also mentioned compensation as well and was going to "look into it".

i am trying to be very patient with COVID, supply chain stuff, stress on everyone right now, etc. so i appreciate the help and PMs from folks and KnightedBMW for hooking me up with BMW NA contacts that got me a response in < 24 hours.

BMWNA customer relations are fantastic. They fast tracked my driver's side mirror and rear interior panels when the dealership broke em.

Sorry to hear about to your troubles, having some dealer tech tinker with my brand new door panel and mechanics would not bode well for my OCD, so I commiserate with you.

Question, doesn't the vehicle allow you to lock/unlock the doors with the physical key blade, in the event that the battery dies or any of the electrical system fails?

I'm not suggesting that you don't eventually get the underlying issue resolved but that might work as an interim solution.

the door lock is physically stuck in the open position. the alarm is set though when you lock the car with the key fob, but you can just walk up to the door and open it, alarm will trigger.

any solution where i take the car back and forth is just a hassle for me, more times the door trim/panels/window is removed and put back on, etc.

i think my best bet is to leave the vehicle at service, minimizes additional things happening, etc and probably maximizes BMW and dealer's incentive to fix the car
