Dimming during daytime

So…. I ran into an issue which could lead into a serious problem.

I got the car tinted 15 all around (minus the windshield). Now my car thinks I’m driving at night and constantly adjusting the brightness of the displays (Central, HUD, Control).

Has anyone had this issue on their G42??

I was reading through other forums and seems like it’s a known issue for other models.
Obviously i could remove the tint on the windows but I don’t want to, unless it’s my only choice. =[

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

That is very disappointing as I planned on having my windows tinted.

Were there any solutions in other threads for non-G42 cars?

I got that one unchecked and that didn’t stop the displays from dimming. =[

I got the Llumar CTX 15. It’s a shade darker than yours.

I think I’m going to remove them off the windows and try the 30s.

It’s really bad that you can’t see the damn displays when the sun directly in your face and your car thinks it’s night time.

Tinting will cause this on the "G" generation of BMWs:

I had an appointment tomorrow to get my windows tinted. I have serious reservations about having anything installed now. Appreciate the heads up.

You could always go with a lighter 35% tint, sounds like that'd be safe.

That's some terrible advice, this is a common issue with the newer BMWs, when aftermarket tint is added, it blocks the light sensor on the instrument cluster, triggering this dimming issue.

There are tons of testimonials on here and Reddit that can attest to this issue.

Here's is just a couple:

that totally sucks! I'm getting my windows tinted next week and was thinking 20% but now I'm worried I'll have this issue so might have to go with the 35% to be safe.

Hey Guys..

So.. still have the tint on (I cannot roll down the windows yet) but i was driving around with moonroof opened and the sensor seemed to work fine until it got gloomy everything went into dimmed mode.

This is a total WTF situation.
BMW at least should give us option to "disable" the auto-dim if they put the sensor in the dumb place..

Good luck to all who are getting tint.
I'm collecting the information that this doesn't seem to be an issue for everyone, just some to unlucky folks.

I might try that Clip on LED Book Lamp. Kind of ghetto but we'll see if it'll help.

Yup, it is.

I'm trying to find an alternative solution before I go back and re-do the tint.

15 looks so nice on the car tho.

I did super light tint since NY inspection

70% front and 50% rears/back

Just took the edge off. So far it hasn't effected the auto dimming.

I'm glad to hear you aren't having any of these issues and you are tinted. it's weird that it would be impacting some cars and not others.

thanks for these links they are quite helpful. some people mentioned keeping your sunroof share
shade open and that can help let in more light, if you have a sunroof. also some people suspect the ceramic tint makes the problem worse since it lets in even less light.

I had my appointment today and expressed my concern to the tint dude. He acted like I was crazy but offered to remove the tint and refund me in full if I experience issues. I guess I'll try to match what G42Bama had put in.

Yea man. Idk on all my BMW's I haven't had an issue. It sucks since tints bring out the beauty of a car. That's why I was like fwaaak it just tint the car. But if it's affecting the quality of your drive, then I guess it's better to not do it.

I did 20% all around and haven't had issues.
Maybe it's the type of film they used.

My dealer intends to do ceramic, but in light of this (pardon the pun...) I'll discuss options with my CA. Here in Phoenix some tinting is almost a requirement.
