Break-in Period
To the ones that have already received their new cars, have the dealerships recommended to follow the break-in protocol? Or is anyone following it?

Does anyone actually follow those directions for the full 1200 miles?

I could be mistaken, and I am paraphrasing here, but i thought at one point there was some debate around whether you should drive a car hard during the break-in to heat up the engine block and properly seat the o-rings in the cylinders (or something of that nature). I feel like this was a topic of discussion ten years ago on the forums with regard to the N54 engine.
That being said, I tend to be a rule follower on certain things, so i will likely follow the break in guidelines (at least to 1,000 miles; doubt i will be willing to spare the extra 200 miles). |

Yes, the theory is that running the engine harder, not babying it or beating the heck out of it, from new helps to seat the piston rings in the bores. This will help the engine have a better seal and possibly make a little more power/run "better", burn less oil, etc.
Personally, I'm careful for the first ~500 miles and don't use cruise control or let it idle for long periods, but I also make 1/2-3/4 throttle runs higher and go higher in the RPM range as time goes on too. There are some manufacturers now that don't even require break-in periods. YMMV.

I watched a video comparing break in differences on a motorcycle. One they followed the manual and the other they just drove the crap out of it. Both engines were identical before and after break in. (They were taken apart and measured before and after). While there is more to break in on a car than a bike, and we most often drive cars for much longer mileage during the course of their lives, I suspect that the result would be similar.

I follow it. If you have an issue and the ECU shows you do not follow break in then the dealer can deny coverage if related. The distance is not so far is it? Amazed this topic continues to occupy forum space. I find it amusing yet ridiculous.

I'm not sure that is the same in the US? I have not heard of anyone being denied warranty service due to break-in recommendations being followed or not.

the thing is if you at any time put the car in sport plus mode or move the shifter into sport mode, its practically impossible to keep the revs under 4500 unless you are manually shifting. I think avoiding a bunch of redline shifts with a cold engine is sensible but unless you never drive spirited, keeping the engine to a 4500 "redline" isn't easy.

What is the actual redline?

Just normally drive it , modern car no special brake in needed . But you can do a early oil change around 3k miles , it is good for your car .

I thought about this but my car came with free maintenance for 3 years. I doubt they would do an early oil change for free.

Might depend on how long you plan to keep the car as to how well you treat it.
If you plan to keep it a long time, ask yourself if you know more than the BMW engineers who designed the engine, have the most experience with them, and made the recommendations. If you know more, then do what you know is best. If they probably know more, maybe do what they recommend. |
