Review of xxii tuning carbon mirror caps
TL;DR: 8.5/10 - minor fitment issues that aren't enough to bother me or make me pay 6x the price for OEM.
As I posted a little while back, I rolled the dice on a bunch of xxii exterior carbon bits (mirror caps, rear diffuser, front lip, rear spoiler), basically looking to replace the carbon exterior pack that I wasn't able to get on the car due to it being an HEA. The stuff has started rolling in, so wanted to review some of the pieces that I haven't seen posted or reviewed. The mirror caps arrived earlier this week from China, and were well packaged. These ones are carbon over ABS, not full carbon. Supposedly they are working on a set that is full carbon, will be interesting to see if these degrade over time, but for $359 landed if I have to replace after a couple of years I'm not going to lose sleep. Install was straightforward, maybe 30mins for both of them, and they very closely matched OEM in terms of placement of clips etc., very few issues there. The only couple of slight issues I came across, where you could tell they were a knock-off vs OEM were: - one of the holes for screwing in the turn signal on each side was stripped. They're held in by another screw so should be fine, and I could have sized up on screws if need be. If it was OEM I would have been pissed, with these I sort of shrugged my shoulders and moved on - on the right cap, there was a bit of plastic that needed to be cut off that hadn't been (likely left over from molding). Was able to cut it off with a Stanley knife with no problem - on both sides the bottom has a bigger gap than it should have (uploaded a couple of pictures where it might be visible). That's really the only fitment issue, and I don't believe it was due to install. In both cases it's the bottom of the cap and not really noticeable unless you are bending down. From the top/sides it looks perfect, and I doubt anyone would know it's not OEM unless they really studied it In summary - if you are a hardcore stickler around fitment being precise then OEM is probably for you, but on the scale of price vs quality I am very happy with these. Certainly would have no interest in paying over $2k for OEM, and love how they look on the car Last edited by Pantagathus; 10-29-2021 at 12:58 AM.. |

Thank you for sharing your review.
It'll be very helpful for those considering the knockoff caps. Regarding the bottom gap, I think the passenger's side is acceptable while the driver's side is something I'd be unsatisfied with. |

That's fair, I think the driver's side is more noticeable because it's not uniform. Passenger side is uniform all the way along, and given it's all black you can't really tell unless you study it. The driver's side isn't uniform. Still not noticeable, even when the mirrors are folded, it's hidden by the rest of the mirror, but I might reach out to xxii tuning to see if they will send another/what their reaction is

These companies making these pieces should make a testfit jig, that way they wouldnt have to go through this.

Thanks for sharing the review and pics.
I just received their front bumper carbon intake ducts. Was really impressed with the packaging, and quality seems pretty good. Hoping to install them tomorrow. |

Yeah I have those ready for install in a week or so. Getting a shop to do those for me as I don't have a lift and it looks like a pretty painful process. Agree packaging was good and quality is good.

It's Carbon over ABS, not pure carbon. That part isn't noticeable when looking at it, but really the only issue is fitment. Minor the passenger side, larger for driver's side. I installed the rear diffuser and side pieces yesterday, and they were pure carbon and absolutely spot on for fitment, so not sure why these pieces aren't as good. I believe they are developing a pure carbon option, so maybe that will improve them.

It looks like xxii tuning has the 100% pre-preg carbon fiber version available. The description and photos are for the ABS version, but I've been conversing with Jack and he says that the description and photos will be updated.
I just placed my order for these. Happy New Year https://xxiituning.com/products/bmw-...-mirror-covers

Supposedly. At $414 shipped it was worth a chance. I shopped around for the OEM version and best price I could find was $804 each. Then the problem was getting them. There were only 2 of the RH side in Germany per multiple dealers that I called. A dealer outside of Chicago actually had 9 sets in stock by wanted retail ($1100 each). Grey market availability isn't great either. I'm more nervous about breaking my mirrors trying to put them on. Dealer told me yesterday that they'd do it. I'll get a break on the labor with my CCA membership.

There is another post where someone installed their spoiler, side skirts, front lip and inlets, but I don't think they mentioned how it matched up against the OEM roof pattern (or the equivalent OEM part), so I look forward to your review.
