M4 G82 Nordschleife track build project

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi everyone,

I wasn't around here very much for a long time. Last week we started our new project and I thought it might be interesting for you.

Some general information about the car:

M4 Competition
brooklyn grey metallic
leather merino black
Harman Kardon soundsystem
interior trim carbon

We aim to get the car ready for Nordschleife for next season. At the moment we check what we have to do before we start to manufacture parts.
A big problem is to get wheels, suspension, etc. for the G82. Let's see what we can do during winter.

Last weekend we went out on the Nordschleife with the G82 for the first time. We just wanted to see how the stock car works before we start the modifications.

First of all we put it on the wheel scale:

BMW says it has 1800kg incl. 90% fuel, 68kg driver and 7kg luggage. So for the empty car it means 1680kg. We measured 1713kg with 50% fuel which means around 1690kg empty. Quite close to the weight BMW says.

On Saturday we went out on the Nordschleife. The difference between G82 and G82 is really huge. Bigger than I thougt. Engine, suspension... everything works better.

We didn't push and take laptimes because it was a public TF session. But I'm quite sure that the car is really fast. Let's see which time we can do after the modifications.

Nice shots and information. An M4 Comp with standard brakes (standard seats, too?) is under 3,800 pounds without a driver. That's pretty solid, and aligns with the way the car actually drives.

After we recognized that some stickers on the car don't improve our laptimes we had to do something. So here we go:

The car is completely dismounted now and will go to the rollcage builder these days.

Even if it will become a ringtool we want to keep some comfort the car brings from the factory. That makes the wiring and coding a bit complicated.

With those new wheels I don't think you'll get your record lap times .
Can't wait to see what you have in store.

We try the cover the rebuild quite detailed on Youtube. Maybe it's interesting for you although it's in German.

The last weeks we didn't post anything here because our M4 was at Ireco Motorsport to get the roll cage.

Yesterday we got it back:

For us it was quite important to be involved in the design of the roll cage. Big thanks to Ireco for that opportunity.

The cage is made according to latest FIA regulations. As far as we know it's the first M4 G82 with a FIA certified roll cage.

To get the body shell as stiff as possible the cage got welded to the car on as many points as possible. The rear axle got connected to the roll cage.

Before the car gets painted now we have to do some more modifications. Especially regarding lightweight there will be some more work to do.

Boy that escalated quickly!

Curious to see the finished product, seems like a high quality build, well done!

The last weeks and months it was very quiet here. Fortunately our M4 looks like a car again. What takes most of the time at the moment ist the engineering part. There are not very much parts available for that car. That's why we did a lot of engineering by our own.

Test-fitted the M240i Racing wing.

The interior is ready so far with the alcantara parts and the Recaro Podium.

For that car the suspension comes from MCS. Very good support and very fast supply of that "prototype" suspension.

The next big topic was the brake system. The original brakes on the G8x are quite good but I'm sure it won't be reliable on the race track.

The first step was 3D-scanning of all relevant parts like calipers and wheel carriers.

At the front we go for 390x36mm AP Racing discs with CP9665 endurance calipers. We already run that combination on F8x models which works very well.

The first prototypes were printed and test-fitted. After everything was fine we are waiting now for the cnc machined parts.

Now comes the interesting part: Because the G8x has the electrical parking brake integrated in the rear calipers we had to find a solution to mount AP Racing calipers in the rear.

The only useful solution is to go for separate calipers for the parking Brake like for example Audi does it on the R8

Because there are no calipers that can handle the original actuator we had to design our own calipers. Therefore we worked with generative design to keep it as light as possible.

At the moment we are manufacturing the first prototypes to test them on the car.

The most important thing for this project was to keep the original actuator to no cause electronical problems. Also the system will be TÜV-approved in Germany.

We expect the first kits to be ready within 6-8 weeks.

Epic thread. Love the work done on the brakes. Have calculated the fluid consumption and specified the piston sizes to work with the OEM master cylinder?
