Winter tires on 19/20 inch wheels?

Hi, I have G82 xDrive M4 with M826 bicolor rims (275/35/R19 in the front and 285/30/R20 in the back). The time has come to put on winter tires, and I found a set of Michelin Alpine 5 winter tires at the local tire shop. Basically I can put winter tires in the exactly same dimensions as my summer tires- two 275/35/R19 Michelin Alpine 5 tires in the front and two 285/30/R20 Michelin Alpine 5 tires in the back for 1,400 Euro. On the other hand, local BMW dealer has a set of 4 OEM winter wheels (M829 jet black rims with 275/35/R19 Michelin Alpine 5 tires) for 4,400 Euro. Since the cost difference is not insignificant, my question is can I go with the first option? Why do the OEM winter tires have 19 inch rims both in the front and the back, and OEM summer tires have 19/20s? What is the worst thing that can happen if I go with the first option? My home town has very few days with snow during winter, I put it mostly for rain cuz I have cup2 tires right now

Smaller width wheels will perform better in snow, perhaps why they ditched the 20’s for 19’s in the rear. You should have no issue running the tires you found on the 19/20’s though.

I had the same dilemma. I could only get Pirelli Sottozero in the 19/20' and the reviews were not good and it would cost $1600 plus fitting etc

I went with the 829M and the Alpin from BMW for $3440.

We are in NYC and you can get the occasional blizzard so figured I would be better off on the 19' smaller tires but if you're only really dealing with rain I would imagine you should be fine with just the tires only and should be able to handle a bit of snow too quite easily. I think one of the issues with the bigger wheels is snow getting stuck in the arches but also smaller slimmer wheels cut through snow much better than wide huge wheels

The 829M's look good for a snow set up in this thread!

Where did you find alpine 5 in 285/30/20? I can only locate alpine 4 in that size.

I had the continentals on order, then same thing, tire rack called me. Pirellis out as well. He found me Michelin all seasons. I'm here in NYC as well. It is what it is with these tires and sizing. I'll take what I can get and make it work. Lol I'm used to Blizzaks on my M, but they don't make them in these sizes for the 826 wheels on the G.

I've been reading all the threads here about winter wheel/tire options, and I'm still a bit confused / undecided about which route to take.

I've got a 2022 G82 in BSM coming later this month, and as I'm based in NY/NJ, I definitely want a dedicated set of winter wheels/tires, and ideally I'd like to get the Michelins on a set of black wheels.

If I'm interpreting things correctly, it seems like my options are:

1) Use the stock black 826M wheels, wrap them in Michelins (as the OP is considering), and get either an additional set of black 826M's or other black wheels to wrap with the stock tires

2) Order the 829M wheel & tire package

I'm not so keen on the limited options that I'm seeing on Tire Rack, and my main hold up with the 829M package is that the wheels are a matte black and the car is BSM (can't tell if the contrast will look off or not).

Another thing I was considering, but unsure if this would be advisable due to fitment / driving experience, would be to order an additional set of black 826M wheels, and go 19" all around as winters and 20" all around as "all-seasons."

I realize that both the width & diameter of these wheels are staggered though, so I'm not sure if that would even work. The main benefit would be that for my RWD car, I could rotate both sets front/back to even out wear & extended the overall life of the sets.

Any opinions / thoughts / help would be very much appreciated!
