Seems there is some "active" open/close venting holes in the front "triangles" ?

Hi all,

After looking at multiple videos, I've noticed that in one of the last videos the M240i looks different in the triangles, it's like they are open whereas in all other videos presenting the car, they are clearle closed.

See two images below

Is it dynamic open/close like the kidneys?

I've speculated that cars with open venting and visible cooler in the triangles have the high performance cooling M technology pack option. I think it's unlikely there are active flaps there. Visually this certainly looks better.

Yeah, I see this stuff breaking the first ice storm that locks them in place, the motor actuates and snaps something. Hopefully, there'll be some safety in place, and/or the cold temp will preclude the need to open them up.

I did take a good look at that yesterday, because I have a very similar - idiotic - design on my car.
The black horizontal plastic blades are fixed. It's just how the light falls on them in different shots that makes you think they are closed sometimes.
I can positively confirm that.

Not sure why BMW (and Porsche, among others) think this is a "cool design" (pun intended).
The opening is very large and on my car there is a "somewhat fragile" (and very expensive) radiator exposed in there.
There are numerous threads on 911/718 forums of broken radiators caused by rocks thrown into them.

Now - I'm not sure what is in there on the G42. Is it a proper radiator, or just some other, less expensive, cooling "thing" for brakes? or whatever.

I recently installed one of these, as extra protection:
https://www.radiatorgrillstore.com/p...adiator-grills
Hope they will come out with a version for the G42 as well if what is behind it is worth protecting.

Not sure if this is abetter shot, but here's my version, with exposure increased a bit in an attempt to show the black piece better...

i noticed this as well with our pre-production showcase model. Not sure if this is a result of the M sport pro package or not. IMO i think it is missing because this is a pre-production unit. there are small taps where the slates would connect.

There is a package named: Cooling and High Performance Tire Package

Enhance the cooling performance of your vehicle with a more powerful cooling fan and an additional engine oil cooler. High-performance tires will match the aggressive racing pedigree with improved traction, reduced stopping distance and enhanced dynamic response. Mobility kit is included.

Items added:
  • 19" Double spoke bicolor style 893M, w/high performance non run flat tires
  • Cooling and High Performance Tire Package
+$2,400

Maybe it is that package that adds extra radiator or something and it is exposed through the triangle holes?

So far it seems it is not dynamic open/close stuff, more like you have this package, you have this open holes. You don't have this package, you don't have them

Direct from the BMW literature

Air curtains are integrated into the triangular inserts
at the outer edges of the front apron, which are particularly large on
the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé. These guide the oncoming air
deliberately over the wheels and, in so doing, reduce turbulence in
this area
