Actually, not surprised to see the Golf R win by a long stretch. BMW switched to FWD platform because they deemed that people wouldn't notice (that was actually THEIR motivation to do it), but they kept charging the same premium prices like for their RWD F20.

By consequence they take the top of the FWD hatchback market while they don't have any brand differentiator left to do so. In the contrary, the competition is years ahead in experience.

They are all good cars, just horses for courses and the best deal you can get. I am very happy with my M135i and would probably have been the same case with the A35, although the lack of rotary dial may have stopped me in a test drive. The R is a non-starter due to lack of colours, a dislike of the wheels and the lack of proper controls for heating, etc. The extra performance of the Golf would have been a bonus, but in reality living in the UK it starts to be academic unless you are on a track and hardly anyone is going to do that.

As I wanted the iDrive, the built quality and comfort I choosed the M135i. The 3 are nice cars but quite different like the reviewer said.

No power tailgate available on Golf - sounds small, but now essential for us oldies!
