TheSmokingTire Matt Farah G82 Manual Review

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
he's not a fan of the looks, but him and zack had many of the same compliments about the drive and the interior. Other than the usual gripes about weight and price, I don't believe they had anything else negative to say about the car

Listening from 17min on, it's basically what will always happen when you drive this car outside. Seeing a lot of EW faces.
To sum it up, huge, heavy, only positive about the car is the engine.

Why is it that my friend who owns one has been mobbed every time he goes out with the car by people who love it? He gets thumbs up, he gets horn honks and then thumbs up, he gets compliments at gas stations, etc. and these are New Yorkers who don't say anything nice to anyone.

Confirmation bias. That's why.

Exactly. The answer to his "why" is that the looks are controversial.

The thing that kills me about these reviews is the complete lack of perspective. It's like they're comparing it to some mythical sports sedan that doesn't exist, instead of basing their comparisons on your other options in the segment.

The car is "super heavy"...unless you compare it to its main competitors, where it's actually one of the lightest.

The car is "way too big"...unless you compare it to its main competitors, where it's right in line with them.

The car has the "wrong transmission"...unless you compare it to its main sporty competitor, the Giuliano QV, which uses the exact same transmission.

On the topics of transmission - the fact that this is the ONLY sports sedan in its class with a manual doesn't even get mentioned. If you want your car with a stick, it's literally the only thing in its class.

Also, and it's unrelated, but he gets a bunch of facts wrong. He says that the car they are driving is a "stripper model", proving the car is way too expensive, but it has literally every option. He also thinks that the ventilated seats are $1k for some reason.

I think the car has issues, I'm not some crazed fanboy, but that review had some real lack of context and perspective in it.

My friend has a regular black 4 series and says the same thing about people checking the car out all the time. People are naturally adverse to change and BMW went all out with the changing the grill. Most are just not used to it yet.

My poll asks 2 questions: have you seen the car? did you like it?

You think because the poll is in this forum is biased lol.

I agree...but I think the bias goes the other way because there is so much hostility towards the new design. Ultimately, they're just f*cking grilles.

so ppl i know that i have seen the car has generally said "not pretty, but an aggresive look"... do you call that a design success? Prob not, but i personally dig the distinctive look

I mean could be a demographic / age thing and i'd rather not get into it... but ultimately as long as you the person whos spending money on the thing is ok with the looks then thats all that matters.

I like watching Matt's videos most of the time. However I cannot stand the Zack guy he's been using more often lately. They are a weird pair together and find the video a little too busy with both of them constantly talking over each other

I think it's due to reviewers having an expectation of how a M3/4 is supposed to be & drive. Those expectations are based on the past cars and BMW has moved in a different direction to keep the car in the same segment as its competitors. If this G82 was actually called a M5, it would still take some criticism on the looks but the driving reviews would all be stellar.

This review makes zero sense. Car drives really well. Car is really fast. Motor is excellent. Road noise is improved.

We need stuff to complain about so first gear is *slightly too short. We don't like the way it looks. Car is too big, but you can't tell while driving it. We think other drivers are looking at us weird.

As a side note, just sold my Civic Type R and agree with everything they are saying in this review. As a pure drivers car whether RWD or FWD, there are very few better vehicles out right now. That car is so connected it is hard to comprehend until you really drive one in anger. Even at normal around town speeds it is a blast. Unfortunately with things getting back to normal I have to start visiting customers again pretty soon and I have zero interest in driving a stick in OC/LA traffic.

G82 looks trashed on TST review-fair?

The Smoking Tire youtube channel absolutely trashed the G82 aesthetics for its ugly nose. As a previous F80 and and F90 owner, I must admit the grill takes some getting use to. Is this car an ugly duckling or a diamond in the rough? Curious what the forum thinks?!?!

There's another thread running already. Obviously we love the car, I think it's the best looking M3 since the E46, but I also don't wear baggy jeans over new balance sneakers, so I guess we all have different ideas on what looks good.

totally agree.. as an outsider coming into M brand while having shopped the competitive set, a lot of the comparisons and comments made are unrealistic for the choices available now.. Yes you can get used but that's diff discussion and buying process altogether.

pretty clear that he already made up his mind about the car before reviewing it. Concluding that he'd rather have a M2CS for the same money while also praising the interior and the usable space right before is a bit inconsistent

Anyone else notice the M striped seat belts on this 6SP M4? I thought those were only reserved for the competition models (USA market) I’m not complaining, I think all M models should come with these standard. Now I hope the M3 6SP I have on order gets these. HEA 6SP models didn’t have them. 🤔

I don’t understand reviews focusing on the looks. We can see the car. We’re not tuning into reviews for that.

To be fair nearly every single review of the Civic Type R involves the comments of ugly, hideous, embarrassed to be seen in, etc and it doesn't change the fact that it's the best FWD performance car ever made and universally loved by drivers. At the end of the day if the car is good enough the brilliance always shines through and people come to terms with the styling while having great fun behind the wheel. Those that don't come to terms with the styling simply get something else and that's the case with most cars as there isn't a universal car for everyone.

Problem with a guy like Matt is unlike the car magazines that test everything from Corollas to Ferraris, he spends no time testing vehicles like the regular 3 series so he doesn't really have perspective of how the segment has grown in size. He thinks it's big based on his recollection of old M models and not the actual 3 series car it's based on. As said above the competition is equally as big and heavier in most cases. It seem like a lot of people unfairly keep using Porsche as the benchmark for these cars and not BMW's real competition from Audi, MB, Alpha, etc.
