Battery Location compared to the F8x

Was invited to G8x event to my local dealership, so I had a chance to look at it in person.

Looks like they switched to good old agm battery (compared to lithium ion in F8x), and placed it right in the middle rear. Now the little storage compartment that's used to be in the previous gen is no longer there Thanks BMW!

Also, what is up with that electric trunk? Who needs that in a sports sedan? Besides, electric opening/closing action is slow, so it was perfectly fine without it.

I hope BMW brings lightweight M3 without all that fluff soon.

Much better location to me.
F8x are pain in the a** as the battery is on the small compartment. Not enough space to pull it up straight.

Interesting, where is the M mobility kit stored now?
Agree on the power trunk, really wtf is that bullshit. It’s completely and utterly unnecessary on our Cayenne with a lift gate. On an M4? It’s beyond redicolous.

mobility kit is velcro strapped in the left corner in the new model.

It's great for weight distribution but losing a storage space is a con in a practical saloon.

50% of that tub space is now underutilized. In the previous gen this is nice big storage space that can be used to keep (emergency kit) things from flopping around in the trunk.

Also I just think it was a cost cutting measure to go back to heavy AGM battery. Or maybe they have it in their pocket to offer lithium ion battery in their future lightweight versions.

I am sure they had their reasons, but I preferred the solution offered by the old design where you can have your cake and eat it too (lightweight battery and storage *******. Also having a battery in the rear right probably was balanced out diagonally with the driver's weight ( at least with the LHD models). So previous gen's battery location probably wasn't too terrible either.

In any case, I just think they could've done a better job when it came to weight reduction. But hey I am just an observer, I am sure they weighed pros and cons of each decision before putting that into production.

I don't know for sure but if it's anything like G20 it's agm in the trunk and small lithium ion under the hood. If there was a lithium ion battery in the trunk they probably would've boasted about it 100 times.

Don't quote me on that yet since I'll ask around and check with the owners to verify.

Sucks to lose that extra storage space!

To be fair, having the electronic trunk is a savor when you have heavy s*** to carry. With both hands full of stuff, just kick your foot underneath the bumper and bam...it closes itself.

The power trunk on my G80 does not appear to have the kick feature. Which was surprising.

I don't know how it is in the U.S. but I had to choose if I want the electric boot or not.
Of course I didn't option it, nonsense feature.

getting conflicting answers, some say main battery is lithium, others say it's AGM like G20.

are you kicking it the correct way? Maybe you need to get it looked at by the dealer if it's not working, otherwise it would be a fail on bmw's part if they took away that kick to open feature.

In US most options can only be bought as a part of a package, we don't get à la carte. But can't complain too much about it since cars are a lot cheaper here.

"power tailgate" is part of an executive package so there is no way to "unselect it" if you want other goodies that comes with that package.

Heck if I know - the sensor might be somewhere weird. I'll RTFM at some point...but it doesn't seem to be there.

There isn't a kick feature - at least not that I have found. There doesn't appear to be a spot for it. Which makes the electric trunk a bit of a waste.

G80/G82 with comfort access and automatic tailgate operation with exterior carbon pack will not have contactless tailgate opening enabled(kick feature).

I don't have the carbon pack. I think it's "won't have at all".

You should have the feature if you have comfort access and automatic tailgate operation.

The G80/G82 documents only state that cars with carbon pack will not have contactless tailgate opening if they are equipped with comfort access and automatic tailgate operation. Cars without carbon pack should be unaffected by this issue.

We just took delivery a week ago of our G80, scouted the trunk for a future methanol kit install. We were also surprised on the location. Additionally the car needed to be on the charger as the walk up feature seems to wake up the car even without you physically having the key on you and just 5 feet away.
Not happy with that one and will turn it off. Never the less we can confirm it's a lithium battery. Pic attached

Maybe originally but the exhaust system was too large. No hands free period.

The training document does not state this. Do you have any reference to this information. May depend on certain countries and market options as well.
