My G82 M4 driving impressions & Portimao Blue pics

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi together,

So as promised I will tell you my first impression of driving this beast.
I was lucky to test drive the car, in Switzerland they already offer it at the Driving Experience Center from BMW in Dielsdorf.
It was the M4 Competition in Portimao Blue with the CB Seats and Black interior.

I refer to the questions from M-SPORT in my original thread "My G80 Order".

1. Flooring from the stand
Unfortunately i wasn't able to test it from 0, but I did a "rolling start" from about 20 Km/h all the way up and it reacted pretty quickly with the downkick, so would say good.

2. Twisty roads
Depending on what steering conf you have (comfort or sport) it reacts very different. the comfort is very smooth but still quiet "direct" so you alway know where you are pointing and the car does what you tell it to do. Sport is harder, directer. Not as good as in the Giulia (as comparsion) but still very good imo.

3. Shifts
The shifts are very quick, doesn't matter if up or down you don't even feel it really it's just there. So would say a good job with the ZF !

4. Exhaust sound
So first of all I like the sound. not too loud but a good sound especially in the sport plus modus. You can now switch the interior forced sound manually off with a button on the console which is pretty nice imo. In the stand if you open the windows you hear it very good and a clean sporty sound. Can't really compare with an F80 as there was none there.

5. CB Seats
Don't know why in the other thread people complain about it. I have a little more on my hips and I felt very comfortable in it. You stick in the seat, you can electrically change like everything, also the cheecks on the side but I liked them! only thing may "bother" is the carbon "thing" between the legs. When you move your leg you can feel it. It doesn't hurt nor is it uncomfortable but you feel it. During the driving I didn't really notice as I was concentrated on other stuff...so my opinion:
GO FOR IT! It's worth and they look incredibely beautiful !

p.s. getting in and out can bother as you have to take care and kind of "jump" over the edge..the leather will wear out if you "slide" always in and out. So a negative point...

6. Additional from me: Suspension

The suspension was awesome. In comfort you didn't feel the humps of the street (ok to be fair the streets in switzerland are like the best in the world haha) and in sports you really could feel everything and the car was very stiff. also shooting the car in the corner it was stiff as hell and I was always in control of the car. And i'm no professional racing driver...so you can give it, hard...the car can and will take it. I would also say how you feel in the car, the car actually begs you to run it high. BUT:
You do feel the increased weight, thats physics...but they did a lot to help it sort it out the issue with the stiffness of the car if you know what I mean.

Overall conclusion:
If you buy it you certainly don't do anything wrong. The grill will grow on people, trust me...seeing in person is like seeing a different car.

Happy weekend !

Thank you Scorpion very cool that you got seat time!

What is your current car/s if you don’t mind me asking? Just to know what your main reference is.

Great insight! Its appreciated. Can't wait for my G80 in Portimao Blue to get here. It is sitting on a anchored ship off of Southampton England.....

I will be using the car as a "very quick touring car" and will be putting 5 -8 hour stints at a time, so I am opting out of the CF seats. Also, neither of the girlfriends care for the CF in the center of the seat.

Congrats, Scorpion! You are officially the first in the world with a substantive review of its drive. If you are familiar with the F80/82, please compare the F80/82 (or the car you are familiar with) with the G82 as regards points 2, 3, 4 and 6.

Sorry for the late answer !
my current car is an F31 328i, yeah I know not the real reference so my impression may be overall very "wow" regarding the big difference between this models.
But I was able to drive a Giulia right last week so I took this as a reference. I'm sorry I can't offer the difference to the current F8x...

I have to admit BMW's adaptive suspension on vehicles I've driven do not have the same comfort levels as adaptive suspension systems by other manufacturers. Maybe there's hope that for once a comfort setting on an M-car actually has a decent comfort level. That blue color looks pretty decent with the black wheels and trim.

How was throttle response under partial load (every day use)? My X3M feels a bit sluggish in these circumstances?

FTFY. Good look at PB paint. From seeing this in person on G20 this looks accurate.

hard to say...you mean by sluggish like hitting a little the throttle and it takes a bit to response ? then I would say yes, but nothing for me noticably annyoing.

and please consider that my review is really subjective and just represents my personal feel.

Most important for me was to feel that I drive the car and not vice versa. I felt all the time in control of it and it's limits seem to be very high. Of course I compare with a car (328i) that has much less of everything, not to an F80.

I was never scared of the power or thought that I could lose control. For sure I was far away from the limit's, but I tried to throw the car into the corners and hit the throttle out of a corner. Also hard braking (which is fantastic with the brake-by-wire system).

and they told me the car will run a little lower than its full 510hp before 2'000km. If this is true, I don't know but seems that a lot of manufactors do that in order to protect the engine.
At least, as they told me.

Great input & congrats for being the first to share your experience! Even supercar blondie couldn't get more than a few feet "test drive" haha!

I'm more confident in Portimao Blue on the G80 after seeing your pics & those posted by others. We've all seen it on the M340i but it looks more at home on the G80.

How did the CF parts (& black trim) contrast with Portimao? Specially the roof, intake scoops, diffuser...

Thanks for posting this and great pics. I had to convert your height and weight so I could compare to mine. I am slightly taller and fair amount lighter so I feel comfortabe going with the CF seats

Thank you for sharing. For a adequate comparison we'll need a owner of a previous F82 to compare. Nothing against the OP, but comparing from a series production to a M model will be a big jump in performance. Personally, I went from a F33 to a F83 and felt a huge difference even in a weight bloated convertible. I'm sure that the engineers from BMW M have dialed in the transmission for the ZF8AT. The engine has been retuned from the X3M to the G80/82. Quite frankly, the S58 wasn't ready for the X3M/X4M as development of the B58 was delayed.

Agreed i want to see the last M3 comp vs this M3 comp and same for the M4..

The engine is the same as in the X3M right?

I guess thats a smart move by BMW to release that engine early in a different model so as to flush out any quirks...

Every single N20/B48 owner I've known gets absolutely blown away the first time they get in a B58, even with just a slight throttle tap in traffic.

From what I'm reading from the OP, the S58 with the new M3 doesn't remotely give that kind of sensation.

It seems BMW doesn't fix the turbo lag yet.

Nice pics and write up. Thanks. Any pics of it outside in the sunlight or maybe from the side?

So there is an actual physical button to turn off the active sound? Or is it in the electronic menu's somewhere?

I'd love to see how PB looks with the 825 bicolor wheels.
