Will US cars have the Otto Particle Filter (OPF)?
As the title says, do we know yet whether the US G80/G82 M cars will have the OPF like the European counterparts?
Really hoping for them to do what Porsche did with the 992 where US cars aren't coming with OPF filter. ![]() |

I'm actually surprised BMW doesn't put them on US vehicles anyway. I recall BMW saying they were going to adhere to the higher fuel efficiency mandates even after the US claws back the severity of the regulation.

No impact, but it ruins the sound.

It is for emissions not fuel economy Actually i believe early implementation did affect engine output on some versions, I think the eu m340 is still rated at 374 hp and the z4 launched in Eu with 335 hp when the us had 382. Not sure if that is 100% opf related |

you are correct, the euro one had the same engine but it output way less power due to the OPF

I will also add without diving too deep toward topics that belong on the politics subforum the US has pretty separate legislative drivers in setting standards for emissions and fuel economy, the whole foreign oil dependance/depletion of resources discussion. But it is true there is an interdependent relationship. considering the detrimental effect to the vehicle (sound, performance) I doubt bmw would reduce the vehicles market appeal just to jump ahead. They much prefer the marketing benefit of touting their fuel consumption being ahead of the standards but that is mostly due to superior engineering combine with stricter euro standards... they can engineer a 382hp motor that gets 30mpg in a 3900lb awd car.... not many other OEMs can |

Unfortunately, remap is necessary in this case. There is a sensor that detects the pressure. If it falls out of range, you don’t just get a CEL, but you get limp mode. It’s pretty well documented at least on the M2 forum if you get bored.

I believe the rather large difference for the Z4 is/was due to packing issues for the OPF, i.e. BMW couldn't use the same exhaust treatment package as for the M340i (but a smaller one I guess) so they had to massively detune the engine in order to follow regulations. |

In the Audi RS6 Avant, its mentioned even the US cars come with OPF due to cost savings. Might be different for the M3/M4 due to higher volume, hope thats the case.

In general terms, yes it does. BMW revised the torque and power ratings on the F8X in the EU after the introduced the OPF.
However, on engines that have been designed from the onset to use an OPF, I believe engines will be tuned from factory to have the same power with or without the OPF. Engines without OPF will however have greater power headroom for aftermarket market ECU tuning.
