Not sure how much of what Autocar reports below is known but it made for interesting reading / a recap of the upcoming 4er and M4 variants:

BMW is also planning to add four-door practicality to the M4 line-up for the first time by offering a Gran Coupé version. The junior sibling of the recently introduced M8 Gran Coupé is scheduled for launch in 2022 as a rival to the Audi RS5 Sportback, according to well-placed BMW sources. They told Autocar that the popularity of the original 4 Series Gran Coupé in North America and China was behind the decision to introduce its successor to the M4 range.
Quote:
[T]he second-generation M4 models will be produced alongside standard 4 Series Coupé and Cabriolet variants in nearby Dingolfing.

That would be a surprising turn of events since BMW hasn't mentioned a GC variant.

Unlike other Autocar preview articles, this one seems to be largely spared from botched facts and outright lies. A couple things are worth commenting on:

- There is no evidence of an M4 GC yet. That does not mean it won't come, but for now this claim should be treated as complete speculation.

- I'm sure its just a typo, but the current M inline six is the S58, not the S52.

Autocar is notorious for getting facts wrong or lying on purpose to increase hits.

Although the rest of the article looks correct (aside from writing "S52" when the author obviously means "S58"), I would treat this claim with skepticism. An M4 GC might make sense, but another possible strategy is to allow the i4 BEV to stand alone as the halo GC model. Also, no evidence of an M4 GC exists yet, whereas the i4 and 4 GC have been testing for well over a year.

Autocar's "render" deliberately omits the horizontal slats from the leaked grille pics.....

interesting if it happens. I wouldn't mind it and would consider it depending on looks of course.

While this article is clickbait nonsense... If I recall correctly (and i may be wrong here) SCOTT26 has alluded to the idea that there may be an M4 gran coupe in planning and it was deemed a miss in the prior gen.

I would definitely get a Gran Coupe. I need the extra doors since I have a toddler, but I like the looks of the M4 more. This car would be perfect for me and for many others in the same demographic.

Fingers crossed!

BMW, like other manufacturers is trying to fill as many niches as they can create. I'm sure there will not only be an M4 Gran Coupe, but also an M4 Touring, an M4 Gran Tourer, M4 LWB, M4 Plug in Hybrid, M4 Fuel Cell PHEV, M4 Monoposto, etc.

It would be equivalent to an RS5 Coupe and Sportback... both very successful variants... nothing inherently wrong... the only issue is that there is always a weight penalty, the RS5 Sportback and any Sportback variant is always heavier than the coupe / sedan... but then again we already have Convertible M4s so...

Why not? Audi has the RS5 Sportback and they even sell here in the U.S. Only thing is that an AWD M4 Gran Coupe would surely weigh almost as much as an F90 M5. And BMW has been pretty much as bad as Audi in not offering lightweight cars anymore. So whatever.

Everyone can afford an M-Car?

Perhaps in the 2nd hand market, but that's a ways off
