B48/N20 Part Interchangeability

Hi all, was doing some thinking about this. I doubt most components can be swapped between the two engines but does anyone have know if the intake manifold off a B48 could maybe possibly fit on an N20. Would be cool to have air to water.

Was also wondering (longshot here) but how about the oil pan... We still don't have a baffled one for the N20, perhaps the B48 is better in this regard.

I'm kind of spraying in the dark here because I don't have any dimensions to go off of.

Thoughts? Impossible?

Been giving this a lot of thought lately. Also does anyone know a good source/brand/shop for intercooler sized air/water heat exchangers? Seems really hard to find them on their own for integration into a custom manifold etc. Preferably thick but not a large cross section and not restrictive.

Forgive my ignorance but...

What is the benefit of said "air to water" ?

The main benefit is since the piping post the turbo does not have to go to the front of the car and then the intake you get reduced turbo lag. Basically there is less volume of air to compress. The intercooler will probably also give better IATs.

EDIT: I guess most people don't describe it so much as turbo lag but the response of the car is supposedly greatly improved.

Not sure about the oil pan, but the intake manifold is a long shot. The packaging would be a nightmare, and considering the B48 intake plenum has a damn intercooler in it, you would have to ditch the FMIC in the N20, re-work the air path, and then route the coolant to the intercooler in the plenum. It would be a disaster and not worth it all.

The real benefit is the fact that it's integrated into the intake plenum, so the air doesn't have to travel nearly as far. Here's a pic of the N55's (left) air to air and the B58's (right) air to water. Clearly shows the shorter travel of the charged air. I would imagine the air to water cools better too.

I "dream shop" for 340i's and F80's literally everyday, and most certainly cannot afford one yet. Right there with you

Yup waiting until the 340s get cheap enough. I love this car and I know its history is spotless but I want that engine so bad...

I think I would implement it as a second pump, radiator and hoses up to where the intercooler used to be. Probably overall not worth it and I should stick to dreaming about 340s instead but hey it seems like a cool idea. I would consider doing it if I knew that the manifold would mate up to the head... But I have no way of knowing. I was also considering 3d printing a connecting piece if it didn't mate perfectly but it is a bit of an investment and I don't want to take it all apart without knowing I can put it back together again right away since its my only car.

Would really help to have measurements of both manifolds or both engines. Or some combination of those.

Yah like you said, probably not worth it, but a good thought . I doubt the manifold dimensions are the same either, considering the internal dimensions are different, but I honestly couldn't tell ya.
