tiny jolt 2nd to 3rd gear on cold

Hi guys,

in contact again to see if someone can help me.
I am experiencing a tiny jolt when shifting from 2nd gear to 3rd on cold. Once the car has warmed up ( drive at least 5 kms ) , it works perfectly. My concern is this behavoiur was not present when the car was new. Now it has 23.000 kms ( 14 000 miles aprox ). This small jerk is present when temp outside is 5 to 10 C ( 40 to 50 F ) or less. I have read various post saying this is normal on cold, but to be honest I remember the car didnīt do it when it was 0km.
Iīve done a reset with ista for adaptation values and run the relearn procedure but after some kms (miles) it started again.
Car is under warranty so unless there is quick fix, I am planning to take it to the dealer.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry: I forgot to mention my car is a 330 Sport Line year model 2016

Assuming you have the 8AT, a little jerkiness is normal when it's not warmed up, or at least my car does it too. Maybe I'm due for a fluid change, but I think you're OK, as long as it doesn't do it when the car is fully warmed up.

Many thanks your quick answer. Yes, my car has the 8AT and it doesnīt do it once warmed up. It shifts like butter. Since I have to go to dealer for other minor issues I will comment this. Thanks again.

Might as well while you're there. I'm leaning towards non-issue, but let us know what the dealer says

Mine jerks on 1-2 when cold for a few shifts. It's quite bad unless I feather the throttle carefully.

all the more reason to take the 3 minutes and let the car warm up. Mine does this as well if I do not let it warm.

What driving mode are you in, is the jolt the same in all modes? If not what are the differences between modes? I'd say when cold for me, I notice a longer lag for smoother shifts in comfort mode. If we're talking about the same jolt....I'm almost always in sport+ mode and like the jolt during shifts. I have always experienced it since new. I notice, the harder the acceleration the harder the jolt for me. I'd actually prefer the shift is hard enough to chirp the tires between shifts. I'd guess your fine and nothing is wrong. Usually when AT starting to have problems, the symptoms will be worse once warmed up.

Thanks for your reply. It is as you say, ie: "longer lag for somoother shifts in confort mode" when cold and small jolt when engage the shift. I know in sport and sport+ the jerk is normal. My concern was related to the jolt when cold. As an example, today the outside temp was 11Centigradees here in Buenos Aires and the jolt was almost unnoticable and disappeared after driving a few minutes.

Continue reporting on this. Today car went to the local BMW dealer and they said they were going to make a complet check with the computer to see if any faults were present. Transmission on cold continues to be sluggish, and I am assuming it is normal.
But will see what BMW has to say.

Dealer today updated my car to I level to F20-18-07-531. I could see it through ista. All the memeory fo the car were erased, radio, prferences, etc...
I assume they reprogrammed everything to this new I level. But I cannot perceive any difference for the moment. However gearbox is much more smooth at least when I left the dealer to my home. I will have to check it tomorrow on cold to see if this change has been efective to the gearbox issue.

This happens to me only on cold starts like you guys say but mine is 1-2 and sometimes its a hard jolt but when I really let the car warm up like for 10-15 minutes it doesn't do it lol.

update: Car is sitill with little jolt when engaging 2nd to 3rd mainly. But it disappear once I drive a few kms. As it was before the i level update
With this update, it is happening that when the car is warmed up, if turn off the car and then I turn on after a few seconds, the engine revs up as if it were cold and then, after a few seconds , it regain the normal iddle speed. I will have to run the car a few days more to see if this continues and eventually ask the dealer if it is normal.
I forgot to mention the dealer said the the jolt, jerkiness, slugish engagement on cold was normal.

Not feeling the shifts in your car, I can only speak for myself and what I feel on my shifts....I'd have to say I believe them. These ZF SAT8 are actually incredibly complex. They work on fluid pressures, speed and RPM among other things. For us to expect them to behave exactly the same from cold startup to warm is asking a lot, especially under hard acceleration. I'd say as long as you follow regular maintenance with them you should be ok.

I should mention I've been in a friends Acura with a Aisin 7 speed AT that was failing and there is NO mistaking it. When it was time to auto shift the car would rev high like it was slipping then slam...and I mean slam into gear. The harder he was on acceleration the higher the revs and harder the slam. From outside the car it sounded like a manual that was redlined with the clutch in the let out.

I concur. I get what sounds like the same jolts and jerkiness when cold. As long as it smooths out once warmed up, I'd say it's fine.

Thanks for you responses and to be honest, I rely much more on your comments / opinions than in the dealerīs experience. For them everything is normal......
