Woodcliff Lake, NJ – December 8, 2016 … Today the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2017 BMW X1 and 2017 BMW 2 Series a “Top Safety Pick”, continuing the company’s long-standing commitment to offering class-leading safety with each new model. In order to earn “Top Safety Pick”, a car must receive good ratings in five different crash tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints, among other considerations.

The BMW X1 has been awarded for a second time in a row by the IIHS and is praised for its body and structure design, boosting its performance in the small overlap front crash test. The BMW X1 builds on the success of the previous generation by incorporating a roomier interior, greater efficiency and technology on the forefront of innovation.

Since its introduction in 2014, the BMW 2 Series has been recognized by the IIHS every year for four consecutive appearances. The 2 Series has been praised for its body structure integrity receiving a top rating in all crashworthiness tests.

The BMW X1’s and BMW 2 Series available front crash prevention system earn an advanced rating from IIHS. In the track tests at 12 mph, impact speed was reduced by an average of 10 mph. In the 25 mph test, impact speed was reduced by 7 mph. The system includes a forward collision warning component that meets National Highways Traffic Safety Administration criteria.

The 2017 BMW X1 and 2017 BMW 2 Series provide a high-level of standard safety features including BMW Assist eCall, BMW TeleService, Dynamic Stability Control, Brake Dry Assist, Cornering Brake Control and Dynamic Traction Control. Optional features such as Lane Departure Warning, Frontal Collision Warning including Pedestrian Warning and City Collision Mitigation are also available.

"Class leading"? That's pretty funny considering there is a higher category, Top safety pick+, that cars like cx3 and rav4 achieved.

Safe cars are all good, but the UKL platform is just horrible and not worthy of the BMW brand, it's basicly a Mini, so call it what it is, a POS.

Have you guys even seen one in person? It is what it is: an entry-level, compact SAV/jacked-up wagon. It does what it's meant to do beautifully. Some parts of it, including the interior fit-and-finish and the leather seating feels better than an F30's and has better steering feel. In the Canadian market, the F48 comes with HUD and ambient lighting in packages that are priced far below the F25. It is what it is; why compare it to the more luxurious cars in the BMW arsenal? In terms of safety features (the focus of Jason's original post), it appears the F48 meets or beats the available objective measures. #flamesuiton #notjustafanboy

As always, different strokes for different folks. My wife drives a 2016 X1 xDrive and it is the best small SUV we've ever had. The drive is very smooth and the 4-cyl turbo engine feels great in this configuration, in my opinion. Not to mention how nice it looks all-around. The IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award for the '16 model is certainly a "plus" for us. Sure, it is not as fun to drive as my F32, but ask her how much she cares about that.

Not only that, 42 other vehicles achieve the same Top Safety Pick status. Not exactly a special achievement, BMW

The one thing I disdain about the X1 us the excessive use of exterior black plastic cladding on the body. Yuck

We had an X1 as a loaner. I was seriously impressed, especially in M-Sport trim. My wife loved it too, and not many cars excite her. The build quality was far superior to what I expected (fewer hard plastics than my F30) and the interior lighting package felt very upscale. It looks good inside and out, is bigger than you think, has lots of available tech features and gets excellent fuel economy (we got ~34 MPG on a trip we took).

The only thing people seem to say negative about it is the fact that it is based on the Mini platform. Not sure why this is such a 'problem'. Feels like the same crowd that got so angry when Porsche started building SUVs from the VW platform which, in the end, made Porsche into one of the most profitable car companies today, and capable of funding such amazing vehicles as the 918.

BMW needs to make money, and the X1 helps them to do that. The more money they make, the more money they can invest into the ///M series and one-off concept vehicles that otherwise wouldn't be possible.

Cheers!
