M Drivers Package Needed for Track Days?

Seriously, how often do you guys top 150 MPH at track days?

I would be going to east coast tracks, and I do not see many opportunities to hit the limiter. Maybe VIR? The Glen? Pocono depending on the configuration?

And I am guessing that even if I hit 150 it would not be for more then a few seconds and I would not be a danger to other drivers.

But I’ve only run bikes on track, not cars, so I have no relevant experience to rely on.

I do not want to spend $2500 on the M Drivers Package if I do not need to.

Your thoughts?

TIA

Jackie

I didn't option it but now wish it did. I have X drive so figured I wouldn't use it but after tracking my car having the 10 setting traction RWD would be nice but overall just having the telemetry data in car for after sessions.

Sebring maybe? Brainerd International Raceway - Donnybrook layout uses the drag strip and I'm up to 155 MPH in a stock engine performance E92 M3 before turn 1 so the G80 would get there much quicker. I don't see the need to go that fast on a car that isn't prepped for it.

So it's not that important in my opinion. I don't have it, don't miss it, but I'm sure we'll get tunes soon that remove the limiter.

M Driver's Package and M Drive Professional are 2 different things. He's talking about the top speed limiter removal. Removing the 155 limiter. One is $900, the other is $2,500

Ah. Brainerd! Raced there once, and i was wide open throttle riding my Honda almost entirely from the last corner to turn 3. Topped out at 145 though back in the day. (40 years ago!)

Good call, but its too far to go for a track day.

147 is the fastest I hit on my local tracks. I kind of regret not getting it, but the paywall is too much. Is it something that can be added after delivery by the dealer? I don't want the M School.

I've seen a few instances when the Germans seem to believe it can be added at the dealer. There are some people claiming they have had it done, but I have a hard time believing it.

Then you hear that you can get it done before a certain number of miles are on the car. I haven't seen absolute proof of this, either. I'm lead to believe it can't be added without tuning the ECU, after ordering the car.

Official BMW Uk literature, points to you being able to get it done, after the fact.

Heres another thread on the subject.

Keep in mind that the speed limiter is based on wheel speed not GPS. So, if you downsize your track wheel diameter the computer will think you are traveling faster than you actually are. This would result in an actual speed limit that is 5 to 10 mph less than the 155 max. At WGI it could cost you lap times.

I’ll probably stick with the stock wheels.

What would a stock M4 comp xDrive top out at on the WGI straights?

It's highly driver and tire dependant but you could see 160mph if you carry enough speed up the Esses. I see low 150mph GPS speeds in a F80 on Toyo RRs (stock power). 2.08 laps.

I thought when you buy it you need to sign up for it. I registered when I bought the car through my dealership. The m driving experience contacted me after about it.

Only hit the limiter at Monticello so far. Didn't get past 130s at LRP/NJMP/Thompson. Haven't taken the G80 to WGI yet, will do this season. VIR is also on the tentative schedule. I can see it getting there on the back straight coming out of oak tree and up the esses into the bus stop at WGI. tbh i am not sure i want to be going faster than 155 in a stock car with limited safety gear.

Post on here when you're doing WGI this season. I hope to do either the glenn or summit point this season. I drove them each in my Focus RS a few years ago and would love to whip this....whip...around them. I'm taking delivery in a few weeks I hope! The car is almost to port.

Will do. Summit Point Main is a lot of fun as well. But the glen still is up there in my top 5 along with VIR, Road Atl, Barber etc.

If I remember correctly there are no walls at summit point. I could be confusing it with thunderbolt at NJMP, both fun tracks but I’m thinking of sticking to the safer tracks until I learn the car. Maybe wait till next year to take it to WGI.

I would argue that the Glen is safer than SPR Main. Yes, not much armco at SPR, just earthen berms in many high speed spots. I've seen cars routinely topple there (usually during races but once at an HPDE as well) once they go off and dig into the earth berms. NJMP on the other hand is a lot safer with plenty of runoff in most places. I will be instructing at the NJ BMWCCA school at NJMP on April 14-16th.

Thanks I couldn’t remember details of each track. I’ll look into your event there!

Does NJ BMWCCA use a website to keep track of drivers' progress at HPDE events? I did a weekend with Porsche RTR and my instructor graded me on a website - can't remember the name now.
