Feedback on the Isle of Man Green G80 M3 Competition shown at the MetLife UDE!

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I saw it today - both inside and outside - and have to say, not bad. The front would take a little getting used to. It was a unique metallic green that looked nice, and I am not a fan of green. The interior was an orange and too bright for me. They would not allow photos, but I was told the unveiling is 9/23.

Thanks for sharing.

Was there roof-rack inserts on the carbon fiber roof?

Thanks

Yes they were and they listen to the masses in that! First thing I looked for and noticed.

Saw the same. I loved it and thought the grilles were much less imposing in person. I was a fan of Isle of Man Green and what looked like a saddle brown interior combo.

The M4 will be at Monticello.

Sign me up, I thought it looked great.

For you who have seen the G80 IRL, apart from the frontal design what is the main difference in overall appearance vs the F80?

Wider, Lower, bigger etc?

Sweet! Was it a competition car? What did the wheels look like? Were they two-tone or all black? This sounds like the spec I would go with (IOMG over a tan/brown).

Did it have the bucket seats or the standard ones?

It was a Comp, all black wheels (think F90ish style), carbon fiber package that includes front fins and real valence. Carbon roof, CCBs as standard, RWD. Automatic only. Standard car will be available in manual, confirmed by the product guy on hand. Unknown final power specs or AWD availability.

MCCB isn't standard on Comp, but is included within a package/First Edition.

Thanks! In spy pics the cf roof had little spines instead of being a true "double bubble" type of cf roof like the F80. Did the cf roof have those spines?

I'm pretty sure it was a spine down the middle, no bubble.

They only give you 5 minutes max in the tent, and there was so much to take in it was hard to go over the entire car. Here's what's I remember. I ended up going in twice.

Grille - no issue for me, all black on M3. No chrome surround. Body color instead.

Wheels - typical BMW, comp all black

Fender flares - yes

M mirrors - yes

18s in front, 19s in back on comp models.

Cf seat backs are an option

Cf front and rear aero additions are a package.

Red start button, M tri-color seat belts.

Seats similar in shape to F80. M3 badges in headrest as before.

Shares rear with the G20, but much wider and more aggressive. Without the CF package, you get aero treatments in shadow line, gloss black.

No spoiler oddly enough.

Laser headlights.

No power dome on hood if I remember correctly. Don't quote me on that.

Stick available on base. Not on comp. shifter similar to X3 M.

RWD available on both models.

Electronic parking brake.

Isle of Man Green is the launch color for the M3.

I think that covers it. Let me know if you guys have any specific questions.

Thanks for digging through your memory! Anything we can learn is a great start! The key here is that forum members who are going to see the car at future dates read the existing commentary and work to add on to what we know by asking clarifying questions based on forum feedback. Obviously not at the expense of enjoying your preview!

Amazing that you got to see it! Can you comment on how similar it was to the various renders floating around here?

Probably not a good comparison. The M4 looks very different in the back from the M3.

My thoughts on the G80 after seeing it at a BMW UDE

I was able to peak the G80 behind a closed curtain yesterday. Thoughts on the exterior and interior below...

Unveiling the new G80 BMW M3
August 16, 2020

It would be foolish to pretend that the BMW M3 does not hold a special place in my heart. Ten years of ownership with an E92 will do that.

That car is gone, but soon, a replacement will arrive in the form of the new G80 BMW M3. While visiting the BMW Ultimate Driving Event, I was able to get a peak at the finished production model behind a closed curtain.

In typical BMW fashion, no cameras were allowed (I’m aware of the irony that this photography blog post has no photos), but because of the importance of the car to the BMW community, I wanted to share my thoughts before it’s officially revealed on the 23 of September.

The Outside
The discussion of this generation of M3 will begin and end with the grille, and after seeing it in person..it’s good! Painted in gloss black, with body color surround instead of chrome, it looks very well integrated into the front end of the car. The rest of the front bumper is a bit busy, but that is BMW’s MO as of late. It fits very well when taking in the entire car.

Walking around the car, you have the typical M3 flair – side gills, double-wing M mirrors, carbon fiber roof, wider read fender flair, and a quad exhaust. It retains the classic overall shape.

Sharing a rear end with its lesser G20 3 Series, the G80 is much wider and more aggressive overall. A rear valence in gloss black completes the look, though a spoiler and rear badge were missing from this pre-production model.

Laser headlights were on the car, in a shape very reminiscent of the current 8 Series. There was a bit of E90 shape overall when taking the car in, which made me happy.

There is no power dome on the hood, but it does get indentations by the grilles and front badge.

The model shown was a Competition spec, so it had larger gloss-black wheels (18s in front, 19s in back), black badging and what I was told would be standard Carbon Ceramic brakes.

The Color
Called Isle of Man Green, it’s a new shade from BMW that leans toward a teal hue. This will be the launch color for the car (meaning all the official BMW images will be shot in this color), and I find that BMW usually gets it right when picking the right hue to show the car in for the first time. Similar to Yas Marina Blue on the F80, or the Mineral White Metallic of the E92.

Inside, the leather seats were similar to, if not the same as, Aragon Brown on the current F90 M5. Seat insets were black, and the seat belts had typical M tri-color stitching.

Interior
The car was not open, but inside I could see front seats very similar in shape to the F80’s buckets. A red start button in the center console, gear selector from the X3 M and other typical M treatments make the car feel special, albeit similar to the M340i I would drive a bit later.

Hope you like Carbon
Available for the first time in the M3 will be a carbon fiber package from the factory that includes front intakes with carbon accents, and side gills and a real valance in carbon fiber. The carbon fiber roof is standard, with the option of a sunroof as in previous generations.

Inside, you can choose to have your seat backs covered in carbon fiber along with carbon fiber trim.

Performance
Very tight-lipped about what comes in the car, I can tell you that it will have a base and Competition-spec trim level. The base will be RWD with a 6-speed manual, while the Comp will be automatic-only. The DCT is gone, instead using the 8-speed typical throughout BMW’s lineup.

All-wheel drive was not confirmed, nor were power specs. Safe to say the Comp will have more power, a stiffer suspension with revised electronics and upgraded wheel and tire sizes.

One item of note is the standard Carbon Ceramic brakes on the Competition trim. Previously a $10,000 option on M cars, it’ll be interesting to see how the final MSRP turns out.

Final thoughts
The E9X M3 has become somewhat of a classic due to that amazing V-8 engine (you can read my thoughts on that car here). But the car was always a bit soft for me, and the ergonomics became dated over time. After driving the F8X plenty of times, I can tell you the stiffer structure was a welcome change.

Nothing will replace the flexibility of a high-revving NA engine, but I’m ready for the next generation. Bring it on!
