Dealership unable to get diff fluid for break-in service with no ETA

Just as the title says, I dropped my car off today with about 1050 miles on it and I got a call back a few hours later saying nobody on the east coast has diff fluid and they can't perform the service. Some information the dealer told me:
  • BMW will not let them use a third party fluid, even if it matches all the same specs
  • There is no ETA on the fluid - could be a few days could be a month
  • They won't do the other fluids - have to do them all at the same time
  • The normal cutoff for your warranty going *poof* is 1800 miles. Their warranty advisor said they have documented that this is an issue on BMWs side and if I do go over that, they will still honor the warranty. Not a chance that I believe them but curious what others are hearing.
  • Three other people at the same dealership are having the same issue
  • Having the breakin done by a third party will void my warranty
  • He claimed that in addition to the fluid change, the process also changes shift points and adds more horsepower, which I'm pretty sure isn't true

Crazy times. Add it to the long list of shortages that show no sign of ending anytime soon. I just finished my kids Christmas shopping. I think that's going to be the next news story.

I had the wonderful pleasure of experiencing this two months ago. It took at least a month to get the fluid…

Did you just not drive the car for a month or did you go over the breakin mileage before it was done?

I drove it sparingly…

Not a new shortage. I heard about another customer’s F90 awaiting diff fluid for its 1,200 mile service at my local dealer a couple months ago, and I had the parts manager order fluid for mine, even though my M4 just entered production. I’m doing PCD and driving ~1,000 miles home, so it’s going to need its service as soon as it gets here.

Still waiting. If I don't hear back soon I'm going to ask for a loaner.

BMW of Grapevine in Texas also just told me this.

I made an appointment 2 weeks out. Went in on the day and they told me they couldnt do it and didnt know when the fluid would be there.

I asked them when they ran out, and they said over a month ago....I asked the why they made my appointment if they knew they didnt have it then. They just looked at me with dumbface.

My car now has 1300 miles on it. So Im a little pissed if the warranty expires past 1800. This is not a good scenario.

I scheduled my service a month before I anticipated hitting 1200. I hit it, still no fluid. Backordered. I'm about 200 miles over and will just keep driving until the dealers stock gets replenished. Such crap though...

I've even called nearby (2+ hour drive) to see if they have it in stock and I can't even get a call back from those folks.

I'm picking my car up tomorrow... I guess with 11 miles on the M4 Comp, I should start looking at ordering the differential fluid.

I wouldn't care about doing the running in service at 2k miles or a little late TBH as it won't make a difference but the bigger issue for me is that it doesn't look good on your service history, if you're doing the running in service late.

I know in some countries you have to pay for the running in service so some people skip it. I remember with the e46 M3, if a car was missing the running in service or it was late, people took that as a sign that the car wasn't well cared for

Make an appointment at BMW of Dallas. They have it in stock and did mine last week. Ask for SA Reesh, tell him Corbin sent you.

Had mine done a few weeks ago but been too busy to post. Turns out they got it in really quickly but lost my contact info(?) so they had to wait for me to call asking WTF was going on.

Ill hit breakin within the next few weeks. I will probably be going around the middle of November. I cant wait to drive it like I want to. I've been mostly taking it careful. I've gone over the 5k a few times, because of the transmission doing weird things.

I put the cheeseburger into 3 and gave it some gas, it didn't shift, and just laid on 6k until I figured out what was going on. Then when I let off the gas, it almost bucked me out of the seat, like I was driving a manual trans car.

I had my break-in service today and they were able to do everything except the differential service. They told me they expect to receive it in the next couple of weeks. Time will tell...
