Stripped out rear license plate bracket

Hey all! I received my '22 M4 6 speed about a month ago and upon trying to replace the temp plate (rear) with the permanent one it looks like I have stripped out the license plate bracket. Unlike the F82, this generation seems to be using self tapping screws and the bracket looks to be of some rubber material. Has anyone ran into this issue?

Update:

After browsing the X3M/X5M forums I found that they are having similar issues with this poor quality license plate bracket. I literally got 1 use from mine before the 2 of the 4 holes will not hold the screw. On top of that the screws that came with mine are not long enough to use a license plate frame with a metal license plate (paper plate was fine).

Have the same issue. One bottom screw won’t hold after changing from the temp. Real crappy plastic bracket. I bought new screws and still wouldn’t fix it.

I ended up buying a new bracket for $65 at the dealership. They threw in the screws for free though

One of the screws nearly stripped a hole in the new one LOL. Service guy thinks that the X3M/X5M plate bracket should work so I am going online to buy one with proper metal inserts for the screws.

Be sure to let us know if it works…I’ve been worried about the same thing, so far I’m good but I’d prefer to have the metal inserts for the screws instead of the self tapping plastic screws.

Any update? Was having the same exact issue. I ended up rotating the bracket 180 since the bottom two holes hadn't been threaded yet. Still feels super flimsy - won't be surprised if my plate flies off on the highway one day.

Anyone who had or has an M2C can comment on the difference?
I've had no problems after numerous screw changes on my old M2C.
If they're interchangeable, M2 brackets would work better.

In the future buy the cheap bracket with brass inserts off of Amazon. BMW has been using the same license plate bracket for YEARS, no use spending so much money on a damn near disposable part.

Let me know if it fits. Amazon says it will not fit the G82.

Isn't the g20 bracket the same for the m3 and m4? I remember the g20 had metal inserts and machined screws vs self tapping screws.

This bracket fits just fine and has the threaded inserts. I put it on my M3 this morning.

I can report that the license plate holder is better than what BMW provided. What a piece of crap BMW provided. Talk about cost-cutting measures.

The new holder is glossy, with a harder and glossy plastic finish. It comes with all the necessary hardware to install.

Below are the pictures.

This is what BMW ships with the car (pure crap). Notice there are not machine screws bushings:

This is the one I purchased from Amazon:

I used the black plastic screws from BMW to install the new one (only because they were black), however, there seems to be a gap between the head of the screw and the plate holder, which means there is the possibility that water will leak inside (maybe...), so I recommend you use the screws provided with the kit. They are silver, but no one will be able to see them, unless you take the plate off.

Since the machine screws are silver (with a torx head), you may want to pick up a set of plastic black covers for the screws. This is what I did. The covers protect the screws, though the vendor claims they are stainless steel.

Overall, I am happy with the outcome, at a third of the price of the BMW version.

Thanks for the review. Judging from the photo, your car is not a G82/82 as your camera is below in the recess of the trunk. My camera is located in the BMW Badge.

Indeed, you are correct. Mine is a G80. They should attach to the trunk lid in the same way.

These plate holders are affixed to the trunk lid with 2 screws, or with 4 screws. Our cars use the 2 screws style. To be sure, you can remove the license plate and take a look.

I ordered one for my G82 based on your evaluation, and it fits just fine. I used the BMW OEM screws to attach the replacement plate holder to the trunklid, then the aftermarket plate holder screws to attach the license plate to the plate holder.

I'm replacing the license plate in a month with something containing a '4' vs. a '3', at which point I'll install the black plastic screw caps.
