Tire Pressures on G80 xDrive

I had never checked my tire pressures since I got mine from the dealership a few weeks ago. My tire pressure sensor went off today and when I checked, the back was at 47psi (I had driven about 5 miles). Seemed quite high to me, but when I checked the manual, it said for speeds in excess of 100mph, you should use 41psi in the front and 45psi in the back, so 47psi is not so unreasonable. The pressures for less than 100mph are 32psi in the front and 35psi in the back. Since my tire pressure sensor was going off, I decided to let some of the pressure out. I'm currently at 40psi on all my tires and trying to decide what to do. I could lower it all the way down to 32/35psi, but I do tend to go fast when it's safe and then I would want the higher pressures. I'm new to all this, so any advice would be appreciated. 40psi seems like a happy middle ground to me for now...

Curious if others weigh in also. I thought the inside of the door said 32 for both front and back though. I tend to keep all 4 around 32. If you're going fast in a straight line, I don't see why 32 would be a problem. If you are on track, I find the pressure climbs very quickly to and above 40 (for this reason I start closer to 26 at the track and let them climb to about 33-34).

I thought the recommended 100mph+ tire pressures were 32 front 37 rear.

[EDIT] Maybe it's different for cars with increased V-Max? Mine is limited to 155.

Also, it seems to depend on the tires you have, and they had different pressures if you had xDrive and/or M Driver....I'm attaching two screenshots of the manual for below 100mph and above 100mph for my M3 setup...

Looks like if you don't have M Driver package, it should be 32/35psi...so no change between less than and greater than 100mph...if you do have M Driver, then it recommends the higher pressures...

You have a lot more experience than I do at this. I do plan on going to the track next week so this is good timing. You actually lower your tire pressure before you start? Do you have to heat them up and check your pressure before you take real runs? Then when you are done, you cool it down to lower the pressure, add more air, then drive off? Sorry for the novice questions!

Just don't lower the pressure too much...

I have M Driver Package, etc. I could have sworn the door says 32/32, but I'll double check. Either way....my rule of thumb is to inflate the tires only up to the point where you are not driving on the tire sidewall. The more you inflate at the track, the less traction you should see. So I tend to deflate tires down to maybe 26psi (you could start higher, 28psi for your first session). Then I take it a bit easier for laps 1-3, and can see on the dash when tires climb to 31-33psi (if you turn too hard on deflated tires, the tires will "roll" slightly and you will drive on the tire sidewall, which can cause damage for sure). Once tires are at least 30-31psi, I begin pushing more limits during turns, etc. You can check at the end of a session where the edge of the tire wear is, and inflate / deflate accordingly so that you are using as much of the tires without driving on the sidewall (there is a small arrow on the tires that indicates where you probably should no longer wear the tire, if needed I'm sure someone can include a pic).

I tend to run higher than the recommended pressures for the same reasons you state. Generally, lower tire pressures lead to a more comfortable ride, with more tire wear - but generally it's better to err on the side of too high rather than too low.

Higher pressure are better for handling, better fuel economy, and less tire wear. So why not err on the side of higher? As long as you can tolerate the ride. Also, in the winter the pressure tends to drop as the weather gets colder, so having a few extra psi isn't bad.

I can't speak to pressures well over 40 psi or speeds >155. I think in those ranges all bets are off. I tend to find 36-38 psi is the sweet spot for me.

Interesting... Mine says 32 (F), 33 (R)... I have the PS4s. I had mine set on >100 and the TPMS light kept going off w 32/33. I was trying to figure out why the light kept going off. Now I know why lol.

Does anyone keep their tire settings @ >100??

We have a G80 which came with Pirellis and the sticker says 32/35 and and G82 with Michelins which says 32/32. Both are identically equipped Competition xDrives without M Drive Pro. March '22 and November '21 builds.
How is the TPMS calibrated?

Yes. You lower it 7-10 psi before you get on the track depending on overall temperature outside. Then check it after each round. Mine would get to 34/31 on its own after a few laps but it was mid 70s outside and I reduced it by 7.

Mine is a uk G80cx and door says 32 front and rear. I can’t remember the settings for over 100mph. Idrive only wants to know size and summer or winter not make. I saw the US manual and this had a lot more tyre pressures listed.

I agree with the various track comments on pressures. However, for roads I would not over inflate as this leads to a smaller contact patch and understeer.

I would assume 100mph is hot tire temps so pressure will increase. I go out at 28lbs cold and they heat up to upper 30s after a few laps and temps about 140s
