LCI is expected for the 2023 model year which means production will begin around July 2022.

Probably a dumb question but not too familiar with how these new systems work having never owed a BMW before. Will these only be available in the new models or do they push the new system to older models (ie 2020 G8X's)?

No, iDrive8 won’t be pushed to vehicles built with iDrive7, same as iDrive7 wasn’t pushed to vehicles built with earlier versions of iDrive. On these major updates there’s both hardware and software involved. But we can expect to continue to receive software updates to iDrive7.

It highly unlikely that iDrive 8 software will be compatible with iDrive 7 hardware. Most likely, we dont see iDrive 8 being pushed to older vehicles.

as much as I'd like to have the latest coolest idrive, the new idrive 8 is all done using touch screen only including climate controls. So there's basically no physical buttons for anything and that could be quite annoying when you are driving and trying to change HVAC settings.

Yeah iDrive 8 looks like it has zero place in an M car. How are you supposed to make quick adjustments to anything in that interface? iDrive 8, as it's designed today, requires way too much diversion of attention.

It is getting a joke.
Have to take your eyes of the road to use the idrive touch screen,
yet I can’t change my headlights on the switch as it says not whilst driving….

Another vote for physical buttons. I hate all these screens in cars.

Sadly with the M2 getting iDrive 8, I don't doubt it being in the M3/M4 LCI. I feel like some of us who don't have allocations will be seeing a 2023 MY in their future.

Which interestingly enough, BMW is talking about removing touchscreens due to supply issues.

Normally, I'm firmly in this camp as well. Audi removing the puck from their new cars was one of the factors in me jumping over to BMW. After watching the i4 videos on the BMW UK web site, it's left me thinking that it will certainly be the future. Having your car have a virtual assistant makes total sense and if it's done correctly it could offload the more mundane things so that you can enjoy the driving experience that much more.

It looks cool and all, but getting rid of physical buttons is just a bad idea. I watched them talk through the features of it and how you can get to stuff with just a few clicks of the on screen buttons, but somehow they don't realize how much of a fail that is. I used to rotate the little hot air cool air dial in the dash frequently, but now because I have to go into a menu to find a digital version of it I never use it. They might as well just get rid of the feature. Sure, you can "Hey BMW" stuff, but that system isn't fast enough yet. If I ask it to turn off the AC it takes about 5s, which I know doesn't sound fast, but sitting there waiting for it to acknowledge and do it seems like forever in person.

You can just click the down arrow until it turns off and not wait… 🤷*♂️

No, I want to be able to turn off the air compressor. I just want regular non conditioned air. Just fresh air on a nice day. Every car I've ever owned has had that button.
