DIY springs or HAS

Anyone installed springs or HAS by yourself? If so, is it similar to F8x installation?

The G8X install is very easy and similar with no trunk access required. I have not and will never do a DIY cause I would fuck shit up.

I've done the MSS HAS on my G80. It isn't difficult, but you'll need a few things - a lift (this is not a jack stands project) and a specialty socket. I can post the p/n for the socket

Thanks. Do you have the torque spec for the bolts? And did you replace any bolts with new ones?

What kind of special socket?

I did it 4 times in my F80 and two on My M2C. I would do it in my G80 if I had the springs already 😂 it's easy if you're handy.

I didn't change any bolts, however I might go back and do that if I notice anything strange with the rear suspension when I'm under the car next. As for torque specs, those weren't available, so we used the same 3 foot pipe on the end of the ratchet handle that it took to remove the rear bolts to put them back on. :

I ended up ordering set of five. I had a 18mm but can't find it now. Ship date is mid October.

There is another way to go about this as well. If you have a 12 point 18 mm deep well socket, then you can use that to loosen the strut nut. To use this method, move the dust boot away from the strut shaft, and hold the shaft steady with a textured glove on your hand while you loosen the strut nut with the socket. You'll be able to tighten it the same way as there will be enough tension at some point that shaft will no longer turn and you can continue to tighten the strut nut without holding the strut shaft

I'll add to this, the front is a breeze, used a regular 18mm 12 point (I accidentally order a 21mm strut nut socket… don't ask me why I order it 21mm because I have no clue) with air impact, under load to remove the strut from the top hat.

However after spending an two hour under the rear of the car trying to get enough leverage to loosen the bolt to drop the control arm, I gave up. I've work out pretty frequently for the past 12 years so I know I have the strength, however there is not enough room under the car with stands to apply the same amount of torque to remove that one bolt. Also it's too tight to fit an impact as well.

Currently I have the front on MSS lowest setting and stock rears, which isn't so bad as the wheel gap is relatively similar. There's no lift that I can rent in Hawaii so I'll need to pay a shop to do it… when I get around to having some free time.

@FITM3NT which bolt you were having issues with for the rear? I am thinking instead of the camber bolt, take out the other two bolts. BTW with MSS mod, M3 looks great.

@FITM3NT did you use something to apply upward pressure to the lower rear arm? It needs to be under some load to ease the pressure and get that bolt off. Probably tricky to let some pressure off the Jack when using Jack stands and not a lift

See install guide here

Thank you, really love how it sits now.

The bolt I'm referring to connects the control arm to the subframe, near center of car. I could be wrong but this doesn't look like it controls camber, it does not have a eccentric bolt.
I did try to loosen the other bolt on the control arm, closes to the rotor, but it was also pretty tight and it had an eccentric bold which I'm assuming control the camber.

Yup, I had the jack under the control arm and still, it was a pain in the ass. The suspension looks to be identical to the F80(which was relatively simple), but now there's no room to use an impact. Even if you have the holes lined up when reinstalling, it still doesn't simply just push through, it must be ratcheted in.

Yesterday when I had a shop do it, I seen the techs struggling as well.

I won't recommend doing the rear without a lift or quick jack. Or just pay a shop to do the rear.
