HUD: Google Maps or Apple Maps for Nav?

I am personally a Google Maps guy. I started off with Motorola and Samsung smart phones, so just got used to using Google Maps exclusively before switching over to iPhones.

It's no different in my G82 where I switch over to Carplay and use the Google Maps app for navigation. I'm just used to the interface, layout, and voice...it's all just familiar to me.

ENTER my girlfriend. She LOVES to be the passenger/shotgun DJ during our drives. With all the technology and apps at her fingertips, she actually PREFERS using regular ol' FM radio. She also refuses to use presets as she likes the randomness of just scrolling through stations (especially during road trips where we don't know the local stations). This proves to be a problem because now I can't see the Google Map directions as she's going through radio stations and I'm just driving blind until she switches back to carplay and/or the nav voice jumps in to tell me the next step.

HOWEVER, there was one time where I accidentally used Apple Maps. I think I clicked on a address link and it just took me to Apple maps instead of Google maps. Rather than type in the address into Google maps, just decided to use Apple maps this time. It was GLORIOUS. The freaking directions show up in the HUD!!! I no longer had to look at the main screen to figure out my next direction and my girlfriend can do whatever she wants on the radio.

That being said, old habits die hard and I still like to use Google Maps due to the familiarity. Is there any way Google Maps can use the HUD feature as well?

Sorry for the long post. I'm a the service center currently and bored.

Why don't you just use BMW's navigation? I usually use the app to send the address to the car before I leave, so I don't have to enter anything. Plus, I think its traffic information and routes are more accurate than google maps.

Yeah, I think the BMW iDrive works best with the HUD. It has the most details as far as I can tell

They must have gotten a lot better then. The built-in nav on my 2015 M3 is completely useless.

I'm using it in a 2018 F80. It's decent with touchscreen and everything. In my experience, in Los Angeles Google maps tends to underrate the amount of traffic, so you end up taking the wrong route whereas BMW's is pretty accurate with its estimates.

Mine always thinks I'm on the access road instead of the actual highway. Lots of stay left to enter highway, when I'm on it already. Then I don't get the directions to exit, because it thinks I already have. Just turn right. Uh, I can't I'm still on the highway.

Mine is completely worthless. I don't have a touch screen, so perhaps you have a much different version.

I use Waze, which is based on Google maps. But it has the added benefits of multiple types of warnings, such as cops, road debris, broken down vehicles, speed cams, etc. And it integrates nicely with Carplay.

What about HUD?

Like you I accidentally used Apple Maps and was surprised by how much it has improved. For rush hour traffic driving in the city, I still use Waze and use HUD for other purposes. For rerouting I still find Waze to be the GOAT for shaving of a few precious minutes. For everything else, I use Apple Maps now.

I route things via the BMW nav to get info and directions on the HUD and then I switch over to Apple CarPlay and have Waze up on the screen to tell me about cops and other real world traffic info. Works great if you don’t mind the extra steps.

If you use Google Maps on Android, it'll show directions on the HUD and electronic gauge cluster just as Apple Maps does with iOS. Sounds like you use iOS, but just wanted to throw that out there if Android was an option.

The only maps that show up on the hud and/or instrument cluster are the built in BMW navigation maps. Not google, apple, or waze from a mobile device.

I don't think that's right. I've used Google Maps with Android Auto and I get turn by turn directions showing on the cluster and HUD. It doesn't look exactly the same as with the BMW navigation, but it at least shows how many miles until the next turn, the name of the road, etc.

Hmm I'll have to test it out. Happy to be wrong for sure.

Hmm maybe Android only?

I just tested Waze, Apple Maps, and google maps and nothing. The only arrows info that shows up in the hud or instrument cluster is bmw maps.

Apple pro 12 and latest app software.

This is what I see on the cluster and HUD when I put a destination into Apple Maps on my iPhone (latest iOS update). You can see the little CarPlay icon on the lower right corner of the direction "cards" in the cluster. Not sure how it looks for Google Maps or Waze on an Apple device but can try it out. I know Google Maps shows similar information with my Android device (Google Pixel) and will take a pic next time I'm out.

Thanks man, I tested apple maps, that works. Google maps and Waze still a no-go, but it's a start.

Native Android Auto or Apple Carplay show up in HUD and front display for turn-by-turn directions.

Running Google Maps on IOS does not.
