G80 break-in service, comparisons with my M2C loaner

I dropped my G80 off this morning for break-in service and was given an M2 Competition as a loaner

This is the first DCT I have driven since my G80 is my first auto-anything since 2003. I did notice the shifts are slightly faster or at least feel different in that it feels smoother even at the most aggressive setting. With my limited time driving home in it I did not feel like there was a significant difference upshifting. If I didn't know to look for it or that they were different in anyway I wouldn't have really taken notice. I felt there was more of a difference with the downshifts though, more akin to when I downshift in a manual and rev match which I liked more.

The shift paddles also seem to have more travel distance than the CF paddles in the G80. Neither good or bad just an observation.

The exhaust is much louder in the M2 Competition. Not sure if that is because it has an M Performance exhaust or if it is an after market exhaust (I assume the car is pre-owned based on the miles). Lots more crackling and pops when you lift off the throttle too, similar to my F80 Competition. The G80 pre-break-in service is more muted and less crackling/pops that I have grown accustomed to in the F80.

The luxury/creature comforts and overall refinement of the interior between an M2 and an M3 is a huge difference in my personal opinion. I was surprised at how basic the interior of the M2 felt in comparison but this might also be how this car was optioned out vs what I am used to.

F87 interior by default is spartan regardless of options especially when compared to any G2X/G8X cars but that's also part of its charm for those who love it. More emphasis placed on sheer driving pleasure.

I think if I had jumped into this back when I was still driving an Evo IX MR or WRX STI I would have thought this was the nicest and most luxurious interior I've seen

Having 2 F80s and 1 G80 back to back has made me forget what it was like to drive barebones performance cars. Not that the M2 is barebones.

An M2C as a loaner...what a time to be alive!

What about overall performance differences?

I didn't drive it hard since it isn't mine but it definitely has that "raw" feeling to it in the performance. Not as fast or aggressive as the G80 but feels nimble and fun to drive. It would definitely be something I could see myself owning if it wasn't for the 2 doors.

That's amazing you got an M2C as a loaner!

I just traded in my 18 M2 and I remember when I got it the interior felt pretty modern. Going from that to the G80 makes the M2 feel almost ancient (the screen is so teeny!) That being said, the spartan interior of the M2 meant all I was doing was watching the road and focusing on the driving experience.

I was really surprised. My Service Advisor told me I was getting an M2 but it did not register with me that he meant an M2 as a loaner until I got to the counter and started the paperwork

It was a really pleasant surprise, helps not miss my car too much.

Will be interested in what, if any, difference after they update the ECM with break-in done. Seems to be a lot of different opinions as what the performance feels like after.

I've been trying to research that myself ahead of time. I see a mix of people saying there is a software change and others saying its just oil/diff fluid change.

I assume its likely because you aren't driving the car near the limit or exceeding 5500rpms is where the big difference comes into play.

Can't wait to find out though!

My impression is something did change. The exhaust sounds louder and the burbles more pronounced. The tech also mentioned something about disabling something in the software (in the video he sent me) but it was hard to make out. He could have meant resetting the service notification or something else.

But overall I definitely hear the car sounding different and its exhilarating beyond 5500rpms...

im pretty sure what they are doing from the in-car menu is just resetting the service indicator. do they actually hook the car up and flash a new software? you would think it would be pretty clear if that was part of the service or not.

Just watched the video again with better headphones. He said he was going to remove the running in-service indicator. So not what I was originally thinking. He was very clear in the multi-point video inspection that he changed the diff fluid, oil, checked for any tire wear patterns (didn't expect to see any that early), checking suspension, any leaks, and topped off fluids like washer fluid.

that's what i figured...RKTunes on youtube has already shown that resetting the service indicator has zero effect on the dyno (as you would expect) so not to discount your experience but it's kind of hard to reconcile how the first service has any real impact on the performance and sound of the car if there is no software change.
