Pre-production models are used for government testing certification in each country, such as the US DOT, EPA, ect. The pre-production = production model, just all the pre-production models (in the 100's are salvaged after testing). For the example, the F90 worlds longest drift was a pre-production M5, as after filming at the SC PC, it went to the CES show and then the salvage yard.

Finally, part suppliers and their suppliers need time to ramp up production of OEM parts.

If you all recall there was a huge time gap from the X7 pre-production photos to market release and as SCOTT26 has mentioned the press will the drive camouflage G80's, as the M8 gap was around 8 months between press drives to market launch.

Ya all have PATIENCE.
We will trade my F80 for a G82 to my wife while I’m going to do SUV duty for a couple of years so I have A LOT of patience

Though I’m looking at one of these to limit the suffering:

I have to admit though that I’m eager to see the reviews from the press events with the pre-production cars . The 4 and the i4 should also be something to keep us fed during the wait.

I see it as both being introduced by this time next year just as the X5M and X6M in which X6 just launched in August, with the next 4 debuting in June next year.

Now what does that give time for in that space between launches that would be highly relevant for the M3 and M4?
..I say iNext released in production form, introduce grill, then follow with M3, 4, M4
