Looking forward to seeing the G80 in person. From the renders so far, I'm not a fan, but time will tell! Its definitely a big change up from previous generations, so IMO its either going to flop hard, or people will grow to love it

the big grill is never going to happen on this car, purely because they need to fit that new sensor/camera system in the bottom front. all the new gen cars have it and i highly doubt they will create a new system just for this car. they will reuse those parts til the next gen.

Not sure how many times someone has to say it, but the big grill has been spied several times on the G80 M3, it is happening as much as people don't want it to. Regarding the ACC, camera and sensors, it isn't that difficult for them to relocate it.

I don't understand the argument that we have to have huge grilles to fit the various cameras and sensors on the front.

My M4 has all of the sensors and cameras and the grille doesn't look like the giant gaping maw of a whale shark. Or huge pig nostrils, as others have said.

Somebody please enlighten me as to why the supposedly best and brightest German engineers can't find a way to put all the cameras and sensors that are needed without having to resort to a ginormous, grotesque, hideously large grille.

I don't think that the argument that a big grill needs to exist for the sensors is what others posting were referring to. I think they were saying they won't do big grills because of the sensors, but we all know BMW could easily move around the tech to work with the grills, likely in the form of an off center sensor/radar similar to the Giulia or Supra. They aren't making a big grill for sensors, but rather for their own design purposes.

I wish they would take Audi's approach of integrating the sensors into the fog light housing. I thought it was a smart way of keeping the grill area clean in design while still providing safety tech. This would especially benefit BMW since they don't have the advantage of using a badge on the face of the grill in which the sensor could be hidden in, similar to say a Mercedes.

I've seen plenty of posts, not just here but in other forums, FB, blogs, etc., where the justification is given that essentially "it's the only way to hide all the new tech", which is a BS argument, and that's why I mentioned it. A friend of mine, well connected with BMW NA, said essentially the same thing in a FB post about huge grilles.

It kind of reminds me of the early 70s when we had federally mandated 5 MPH bumpers for 1973, and for a couple of years we had these hideous bumpers that looked like someone bolted a 4x4 on the front and rear of all new cars, BMW included, because automotive designers didn't have time to figure out a decent workaround. Then, good designers figured out how to meet the requirement by hiding the bumpers with sculpted bumper covers and pushing the grilles farther forward.

I'm also well aware that BMW thinks that they have to copy all of the other manufacturers. The Japanese designers (Lexus) started this horrible design trend. Then Audi jumped in, and of course all the American truck designers, where a large grille may actually look good, but it's gotten way, way out of hand. This is what truly makes me sad, that BMW is so insecure that they have to copy. This is likely just a design fad and in a few years, this too shall pass. And since BMW is one of the last to abandon their legendary and iconic design, we may be stuck with this after everyone else has come to their senses.

Still wondering how the front license plate is going to fit in and not look super out of place for states where front place is necessary?

Oh its going to look out of place no matter what. Whether its off center like a Giulia - or every GTI on the road - or crossed over the two grills in the center, it will not look good, just look at how bad the new 7 series with a plate looks now imagine that with an even taller grill, not to mention the ACC radar will also likely need to be moved to a new and awkward location. Best solution is going to be putting no plates on at all. Just another reason why big kidneys don't work, they can't be designed in a way to allow for a front plate without looking awkward due to the dual frame styling.

Just awful. Unbelievable that made it to a production car.

No doubt. The F90 doesn’t have flared fenders for one.

As for the new grill we should get another look at it in a month at Geneva on the i4 concept. Not that we need another look since it’s already revealed on the 4 series concept.

Though with the Virus situation I’m more concerned of a total meltdown in supply chains making car deliveries impossible. With a handful new locations having reached the critical mass for the Wuhan threshold that caused exponential infection rate it looks quite dire IMO.
