longevity of your G8X

Hello Friends,

What are the maintenance tips and advices to keep your car for long time, let’s say 10 years.

Does extending bmw warranty to 7 years do any good ? Is it recommended?

Thanks

I’m not sure anyone can answer this question, the platform has only been active for a few years.

This will be my first M, but I've had two previous 3-series for 12+ years, and my experience is that they're not significantly less reliable than other brands (including Japanese), but they ARE much more sensitive to promptness and quality of maintenance. Keep up with fluid change intervals, and regularly inspect wear parts; replace as needed. Use OEM (not necessarily OE) parts whenever possible.

Wow - 12 years !!!
Do you use bmw extended warranty for replacements of those wear and tear or just any other shop!

I also assume you didn’t tune your car to live that long

I did not have, nor need, an extended warranty on my previous E46. I did (now long expired) on my current E90, because the diesel emissions controls were known to be wonky (and have proven to be). It helped some, though I did have additional emissions-related expenses after the extended warranty expired.

I do a fair amount of my own work--fluids & filters, brakes, suspension, etc. Anything I don't want to do goes to a local indy, who is a BMW Master Mechanic that previously worked at an area dealer. He's done my glow plugs, trans fluid + mechatronic seals, etc.

You assume wrong. The E46 was NA and not really worth tuning. But I had a JBD on the E90 from shortly after I bought it. After my second bout of emissions nonsense, I removed the EGR valve and cooler to prevent further recurrence, and had the ECU tuned by DUDMD to Stage 1, along with having the EGR coded out. I haven't dynoed mine, but other who have with the same tune have shown right around 500lbft at the wheels (stock: 425 at the crank).

I put 78k hard miles on a FBO tuned F80 with only one issue and the intercooler pump went out. No crank hub fix or anything. No extended warranty just kept up on maintenance and changed oil every 5k miles. Had 60k miles on an F90 with zero issues. Not tuned. Just lowered with wheels and catless downpipes. I have a G80 now. So far so good. A little further back my wife had an E70 X5M that we put 115k miles on. At about 110k miles turbo feed lines needed replaced and the rear main seal needed replaced. Before that had an E39 M5 that i put 200k miles on. Still drove great but had to replace wear and tear parts on it. Timing chain guides, timing chain, cam sensors…etc. Before that had an e46 M3 that was my wifes and we just started having electrical issues with it after 135k miles. Ive always had good fortune with M cars as i always take care of them.

I've had my E46 for 20 years and now my son is driving it. That said, she's now squarely in the crosshairs of some maintenance gremlins. The known issues have been cared for, but now I'm facing some oil consumption and steering rack issues. The headliner is falling too. :-(

Happens when things get too steamy in the car, too often. Your son, or you, or both of you over the years.

Also happens when the 20 year old garage queen is suddenly a high-speed, rap listening, windows rolled down machine.

The G82 is my first M car, but I also own a 2007 328xi that I bought used in 2010 (12 years under my ownership). It has never seen a shop except to perform a few free recalls. All repairs and maintenance have been performed by myself. It still runs silky smooth at 153k miles and I'm only looking to sell it to flip for a cheap truck; it does not make sense for me to own 2 coupes. I was religious about keeping up with fluid changes and swapping worn parts at the first sign of wear (loose bushings, leaky struts/shocks, etc). Vehicle has never left me stranded in the 12 years I've had it but it did fail to start at home a few years ago when the starter went out. It's even still rocking the original water pump which is known to be problematic on that platform. It has required 2 repairs I consider somewhat major but everything else I would classify as minor or routine maintenance. Obviously my experience is anecdotal, but if you take care of it, perform the maintenance on time and use quality parts when repairs are required I anticipate you'll be just fine.
