When you say negative effect, do you think it will damage anything. I noticed my car was making a funny vibration with valves closed until car warmed up going through neighborhood so I started leaving valves opened. I did a few hard pulls with valves closed but won't do it anymore.

By negative effects I mean the car was measurably slower than usual and the logs showed it was failing to meet the requested boost by a large amount. I don’t think a few pulls with the valves closed is going to damage anything, but I would try to avoid doing it.

i never heard of any issues with going WOT on closed valves, but why do it if lowers performance and puts more stress on the engine/turbo.

I installed the valve controller for this reason. My local track has a 95db limit so open valves in sport would put me over that. Hoping the half open position will pass tech.

I've learned that some G82 (maybe the first model year?) at least have no grommet where other cars do - instead it is sealed shut. Some people have simply drilled through this part of the trunk anyways to allow for wires to pass, then fit their own grommet.

Alternatively, there is a way to route wires farther on the trunk sides, though need to uncap the SST connectors to fit wires through the holes.

Finally, SST does say it's an option to mount the controller entirely on the underbody, but this seems much less secure to me and I want to avoid any chance of rattle and vibrations. I won't go this route.

I plan to try one of the above two options this weekend when I have some more time. Meanwhile, I have been driving with PSI midpipe and stock valve controls - I think this sounds worse and quieter than having valves open when in sport modes. So will def look to get SST installed.
I did finally get it installed. I chose not to leave the controller inside the black box in the underbody of the car. To me, that seemed like it may be prone to rattle which seemed to cause the issues I had with my old VSC2.

I drilled through the solid plugged holes in the trunk that conveniently others already have a grommet for. I did not yet install a grommet but may in the future. Need to remove the car battery in order to fit a regular size drill in this space.

The sound difference is night and day, combined with a midpipe. I think the controller is a must for everyone, but I do wish I had the grommets in the first place....

They aren’t tho. My sst is set to remember the last operation so if I don’t remember to close the valves when I park, the next cold start has the valves open

Then set it to always start in the oem position, which is closed.

Do any valve controllers work with the OEM cabin exhaust button or do they all need a separate remote?

There is also a less expensive Chinese product that works with the oem button, and actually has a better install than the Awron. Haven’t seen anyone try it yet though.

Thanks. I’ll check it out. First I need my car delivered, then a mid pipe and some other mods before I consider a valve controller.

I am interested. Besides possibly not working at all, any downside to trying?

it'll work but won't last long, and you are going to end up losing over ~ $350 for this controller when you get the SST proven to work for $100 less and it is not a PITA to install and uninstall

With SST you can force the valves open, close, stock (which uses the exhaust button), or at 50%.
You can also use the mirror buttons to control the valves.

I don't feel that with all these features, the exhaust button is worth it

I went back and forth between the Dahler and SST but ultimately went with the latter given the price and what appears to be an easier install via the trunk since I don’t have access to a jack or lift. Thank you to mike@x-ph.com for the hookup; looking forward to installing and hearing the difference

What size nut/screw did you use to remove the cover? I’m a total novice when it comes to tools and I accidentally pushed the grommets into the cover wells

  • I also received mine the other day and was very surprised that it came loosely packed and a USPS bubble envelope. There was no box, no instructions or anything. I was happy that it didn't get somehow damaged in shipping with no protection other than that little bit of bubble wrap the envelope is made of.
