Anyone jumping to a G90 M5?
If so, share your thoughts. If not, also share your thoughts

I'm waiting on a G8x build right now and I've been kind of thinking that I should have waited for the M5 to drop first and see if I like it.
I'm glad I didn't. It looks like an M2 with acromegaly. I wasn't a fan of the G8x when it initially dropped either but it was more because it was odd and unexpected. It still looked aggressive as heck. The small lights on the new M5 look so awful. The G8x looks like a bigger car even though it isn't. EDIT: There's a good chance the car will grow on me in the future but big downgrade from F90 imo. Last edited by NYG; 06-26-2024 at 11:28 AM.. |

Its gonna be a tough call for me--- I like the looks and the overall power but even the best chassis cant hide the weight which is well into the 5000 lb range.
I do like the entry price point though; its very affordable to say the least and I am loyal to the brand. So its probably not a tough call for me as I keep typing LOL. I mean I have had an E39, E60, F10, F90... so why not It will be a highway crusher for sure. I just watched the latest Throttle House video about the AMG GT63 and how its even bigger more powerful brother is coming in hybrid format- had to pause it and quote James here LOLOLOL

I wasn’t a fan at first when seeing pictures, but when I saw Matt Watson from car wow doing a review, it looks way better in video. Lowered with aftermarket wheels will look amazing. Definitely a cruiser and not a track weapon even if it has the M5 badge

ahhh....1000 pounds heavier than the previous M5. Only 100 more HP. Basically the same sprint times. I'm into boating but holy hell!

Two observations:
Holy hell is it heavy. It's like 300 lbs MORE than my wife's Cayenne Hybrid. Seriously. Perhaps, as they said on Throttle House about the C63, it is made of anvils. Second: I'm impressed that they made the new 5 series look like something worth buying. The current car is just sooooooo MEH. Sorry 5er fans, but I saw one the other day sitting in a parking lot and thought it was a 2 series active tourer. Or something. It was the most non-descript BMW ever. |

I think it’s a pretty cool car and I would love to test drive before judging the weight issue, as I think BMW did some testing and may know 2 or 3 things more than us on how to set up the car ..

What?
My ‘22 X7 is only 20pds heavier than the new M5. If you don’t think that’s a ludicrous weight for a M5 sports sedan I don’t know what to tell you

His comment was because you are using "pds" instead of "lbs" for weight.

The new m5 is going to perform that electric/hybrid motor is going to pull up top. I bet it’s faster than the f90 after like 100mph.
M5 has always been a highway monster it’s no track car. Even the g80 is heavy for what it is but you don’t even notice it. |

I personally love the way it looks. I had an F90 M5 Competition and that car definitely was one of the few cars I wish I'd never bought - just not a fan. The new G90 is visually more exciting, but the weight is up there too. To keep it in fair perspective, the G90 does have an EV range of 40 miles given the 20kw battery and if you compare it to a competitor, the Panamera turbo S e-hybrid, which used to only have a 17.9kw battery (if you were lucky got 18 miles of range) and they weighed around 5400-5500 lbs. They later upgraded to a 25kw battery and I cannot find how much this new one weights, but certainly more. All things considered, the M5 is 4 inches longer than a Panamera and 2 inches wider and still manages to weigh less while also costing less than half. Pretty good if you look at it that way.

I try not to judge cars without seeing them in person, but the G90 has grown on me a bit. This is R44's render with some minor mods - looks good IMO.
I have another G80 on order and have the option of waiting for a G90, but it just isn't enticing enough for me considering I do some track work.

I am still in "What do I do land" in terms of my next car. (Granted it is a good problem to have)
Initially I was all in on the G99 prior to seeing any info about it. Then the details started rolling in. 1. I loathe the fact that they removed the gear lever in the M version of the car. Not a deal breaker but another aggravating negative on the SWOT. 2. Weight: I was unhappy about the weight of the M4Cx but this is out of control. Beyond the performance ramifications the excessive weight will dramatically cut the life of tires and brakes. I have a year to decide. Normally I lease for 3 years, trade up/in and 2. Which brings me to #3 3. FOMO. The S68 in the G9x will make 585 hp with the hippy box spitting out an extra 197 for 717 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque respectively. That V8 has a lot of room for power and I doubt highly that BMW will allow the M5 to take a back seat in the Luxo high performance saloon category without having an M5 Competition in the line-up. Which brings me to #4 4. Price. Its not really about affordability its more about price point. Let's say the G99 does get a competition version which puts out north of 750hp 800ftlbs. That would be enough for me to put down a deposit. However, if that price point creeps north of 150k, then it becomes a "for a few thousand more" debate. Once that 150k barrier is broken, there is more competition to be had. So I am just going to sit and wait another 6 months and see what happens. If I had to make a decision today, it would be another M4 or keep the one I have.

I just got my second G8X and I am somewhat already used to it. Craving more power without voiding any warranties.
I am Interested in the added power but this is just the M5 maybe, hopefully there will be more powerful versions to compensate for the added weight? Fingers crossed 🤞🏾 |
