They already did?

You think they will bring it back and test / develop it vs the S58 engine just for the M2?

Interesting. I think there is less than zero chance.

G87 M2 gearbox choice will 99.99% be the one the G80 M3 / G82 M4:
  • LS58 6-speed manual gearbox;
  • M8HP76 M 8-speed auto gearbox (aka "ZF8" | ZF = Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen = Cogwheel Factory Friedrichshafen).
M-DCT (made by Magna PT, formerly known as "Getrag" | "PT" = powertrain | "Getr" refers to "Getriebe" = transmission) is discontinued from July 2021 onwards.

ZF and Magna PT (Getrag) are competitors.

One of the advantages of the G87 M2 (S58 engine) over the F87 M2 (N55/S55 engine) for the European market:

The roof info is incorrect. Buyers will be able to choose between regular (with a sunroof even) and carbon roofs.

I left that fraction for the hypothetical event that gearbox manufacturer ZF would go out of business.

Does anybody know if the carbon bucket seats from the M3/M4 will be available in the G87 M2?

I hope not, otherwise I am willing to wait for the Competition (but not the CS - too expensive)

Let's rephrase your question: what other BMW engine than the S58 do you think that BMW would deem appropriate for the OG G87 M2 ?

It doesn't seem likely to me but hey they're using the B58 in the Supra and people are still pawing all over it.

They could beef up the B58 like they did with the M2 N55. I don't think M diehards would be happy with the B58 though. We'll find out soon enough, but not soon enough for people to pick up a new M2C instead. By then everyone will be stuck with used F87s

Existing:
  • B58B30O1: 285kW (382 hp | 387 ps) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft);
  • S58B30T0 (standard): 353 kW (473 hp | 480 ps) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft);
  • S58B30T0 (Competition): 375 kW (503 hp | 510 ps) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft).
Imagine for a moment that you were a BMW engineer:
  • do you prefer to squeeze even more out of the B58B30O1 or do you prefer detuning the S58B30T0, considering that there will be stronger G87 M2 variants to be developed too ?
  • do you still have fond memories about the development hassle when the N55 of the F87 M2 needed to be replaced by a detuned S55 for the F87 M2 Competition (a later variant) ?

N55 (N55B30T0) features indeed an open deck layout, but the S55 (S55B30T0) is closed deck.

In the past BMWNA was mistaken by indicating in some press materials and on its website that the N55 sporting the M2 was closed deck. That mistake was rectified (see here).

You would have to be a fool to fall for a b58 after the N55 to S55 fiasco. Maybe in some shitty world where they only have the MT on the b58 version. I think everyone would dump on them for that.

I suspect the G87 will be quite a bit more expensive and have a lot more options to up the price and capture the people who can't deal with the look and size of the g80/2.

I also expect BMW to hold back popular stuff like the bucket seats for the comp or CS version, CF roof probably again even though the rumor says no.

Adaptive dampers this time around? No idea.

No clue if it will get XDrive at some point.

I'll bet you money that it's the detuned s58 unless you have insider knowledge.
