Akrapovic + PSI midpipe + VSC-2 controller on G80 M3

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
install took about 3-3.5 hours with pizza+beer and waiting on a 13mm deep socket (needed for the midpipe -> downpipe connection). cutting the akrapovic titanium pipes flatten sawzall blade, lol.

bought my PSI midpipe back in october, i had zero clearance issues with the center brace, so happy about that.

the only real issue is the valve controller cable length. because the akrapovic exhaust valves are much, much closer to the rear of the car, the stock cables 1000% do not reach, with the VSC-2 controller, we were able to make it reach, but man i really would like to find a set of extension cables.. anyone know??

Driving Experience / Review

put about ~50 miles on it so far.

i had to bimmercode out active sound (ASD). with the valves fully open and ASD on, it actually hurt my ears inside the cabin.

Valves closed, its incredibly tame and civil, zero drone, comfortable at any driving speeds.

Sport+ and valves in factory settings, the exhaust is loud, but noticeably linear in terms of noise to throttle/speed. This is still great for spirited driving or just enjoying the car.

VSC-2 controller in open setting, meaning valves 100% open 100% of the time, there is considerable drone < 4k RPM, its loud, feels like the sound comes right through my skull, lol. This is only for very very spirited or track driving, where you are wearing earplugs and a helmet, IMHO. too much drone or just too loud.

the distinct sounds between valves open and closed is very much appreciated. i also didn't think i could get that deep of a sound out of a straight 6 either. very happy overall.

Car sounds great! Could this be achieved with just a slip-on Akrapovic and PSI midpipe?

yea certainly. the valve controller just lets you open the valves 100% at all throttle positions and in comfort engine mode, but at full throttle in sport+ there is no sound difference. also to get the burbles or whatever when you let off the gas, you have to be in sport+ mode.

you would have an issue of not being able to connect the valve controller back up. there is no way without either the akrapovic sound kit or a controller for the cables to reach. given the position of the valves on the akrapovic exhaust, but i am certainly not an expert and i maybe wrong, but 3 of us did this install and we couldn't figure out how to make it work.

i really want to find some extension cables if possible, but don't know of anyone who sells such a thing.

apparently @ $100 (1/2 the cost of the VSC-2) these work on G80 as well... https://www.cgprecision.com/#!/Exten...825/category=0

Thanks for the info. I've been searching for the right pitch and growl and I think you've nailed it with this setup.

Considering the function of the VSC-2 controller it looks to be a fairly simple assembly with maybe 5-8 wires per cable? A soldering iron, heat shrink and few feet of wires could get you the few extra inches you need quite inexpensively.

yea, that and some heat shielding would certainly get the job done for very little.

Has anyone actually successfully used it on the G8X platform?

The issue isn't price as much as it is availability. Can't get the VSC2 very quickly right now as it's a 4-6 week wait time.

i emailed cgprecision this morning and they said it would work, but who knows.

i might try because i am lazy, if its in stock, otherwise i'll just solder mine own extension later in the week.

heard back from cgprecision on the extension cables, besides them costing $99 + $23 shipping, they said it would take 1-2 weeks for them to make and then ship, LOL, so i will just be doing my own extensions this weekend. 10x cheaper and then i can size it perfectly.

Akrapovic really needs a midpipe to release that signature sound. Congrats.

not sure about the midpipe but akrapovic has the exhaust weight difference on their website. the psi midpipe is 100% lighter by just lifting them but i have no clue of actual numbers.

Sounds horrible. It needs the longer S pipe to fix the flatulance noise.
