Agreed. I have xDrive with summer and winter tire sets. The winter tires, by far, make the biggest difference when the temp drops. Even with AWD, I can get the rear end to step out with either set and I don't have S58-levels of power. I couldn't imagine driving an M car with summer tires under 30 degrees even with AWD.

BMW should offer a second set of winter wheels/tires at a reasonable price on all their summer tired cars and get buyers to sign off on a waiver if they do not take them. Surprised they don't for liability purposes. A buddy of mine in Canada bought an X3 with summer tires included and nobody told him about it. Two months later the weather turns and off the road he goes. Nobody hurt but the car was totaled and he was completely shaken.

Firstly, glad you are ok. That’s the main thing.

However, I find it hard to believe ‘black ice’ is to blame here. How many others crashed in the same spot the same night? It hasn’t been that cold in the North East the last few days at all

Driving too fast for the conditions more likely

Winter tires might not have saved you if it was genuine black ice or you were driving too fast for the conditions

I have a RWD M3, in the North East. These cars are fine in winter with the right tires and the right driving style but any car will not survive the winter if driven inappropriately on incorrect tires

I ran winters the first winter, more recently I’ve ran summers but only use the car when the conditions permit. If the conditions are poor, I take my SUV. I know not everyone has that luxury and in that case, you need to swap on to winter tires

Cheap lesson in the end I think. You made it out alive thank god

wait, winter tires don't save you from black ice? (ignorant, our country effectively "bans" winter tires)

It's not "useless". Getting real sick and tired of all the "summer tires turn into hockey pucks below 40F comments". So what at 39.9F, the car just has zero traction? Nonsense.

Temps in NYC can hit 30-50 in a span of a few hours. I've had no issues driving with summers in the winter in NYC as long as day time temperature is greater than 40. If it is less, the car stays home.

If the highest day time temperature in your city is <30F, I'd get winters. NYC you can do without as long as you are sensible.

Obviously OP’s climate is different and the proof is in the pudding. Arguing otherwise is foolish, just refer back to post #1. Maybe it doesn’t apply to you where you live, but if you’re ever in NY, be sure to learn a lesson from others, it’ll be cheaper for you.
We? Ok then.

I’m not disagreeing for one minute winter tyres aren’t a good idea.
You decided to imply I made a statement that was untrue, that pisses me off just so you know where I’m coming from.
Scotland has spells of severe winter conditions and arguably on par with the US areas in question.
So my point all along is drive to the conditions, that’s exactly what 99% of people here do in the winter using the same tyres all year round.
Anyway, the point was not to beat up the OP for his mistake, shit happens and is anyone commenting on his mistake perfect.
No.

Excuse me what??? You're actually annoyed that people aren't happy he was driving on performance SUMMER TIRES in the winter??? Come on man... it's not just himself he's putting at risk... he's putting the lives at risk of other people on the road as well. If you can afford a BMW M you can afford winter tires.

Here in Scotland those temps are not unnormal most winter days, and I never ever hear of anyone swapping wheels on their performance cars.
You take it easy and respect the conditions, but black ice shows zero respect back.
Some really shitty comments getting thrown your way, pretty sad the people like to just stamp all over you when your obviously down.

Good luck.
Those aren't shitty comments... those just happen to be comments from people with a brain.

Not a single car I know has winter tyres on it, not one. I never see local cars with wheels swapped in winter.
Do you think I just waste my time posting lies on forums?
I think if that’s true, there are a lot of people around you who apparently don’t pay attention to what’s going on.

Summer tires in the winter on a RWD high horsepower vehicle is disaster waiting to happen.

Not an M4 but even my RWD F32 w/ the B58 without an LSD, the rear gets squirrely so easily when its remotely wet. I still have a dedicated Conti Extreme Contact DS for summers and Pirelli Sottozeros for winter but I think once the Contis wear out I'm gonna switch to HP all-seasons and slap on the winters only when the first snowfall hits.
I feel proper winter tires are too extreme for where and how I use my car and choose to put Conti DWS (UHPAS) on in the cold.

I hope the driver of the white M4 is doing ok. The car can be replaced!

There is no way I would drive a Porsche or a BMW in New York City regardless of the weather!

I have GEICO and I don't even drive my M4 Comp in the rain or at night. If it's not Sunny Southern California weather, the M4 will stay in the Garage.

Glad to hear OP is okay. Certainly sucks but at least the car is replaceable.

For all you nonbelievers out there thinking summer tires are okay year round, here’s an article straight from Michelin regarding it.

I use the same on mine as well. They work just as well if not better than winter tires on pavement and are a significant upgrade (obviously) over summer tires.

There’s quite a bit of compromise in braking on snow, but feel they do the job in the Northeast US where the original poster is located.

Hey G82Anxious. So sorry about your toy. The main thing is that you are ok. While we all know you love your car. It is material and replaceable. Time to take a break, regroup and plan for the next toy. But the main thing is that you are ok and the car protected you. Hang in there and be safe.
