Very glad you're OK OP & very sorry about your baby, I know that pain all too well

Yes, driving on summer tires in the winter isn't a great idea, but as someone else said, the relative softness and tread pattern of winter tires will not perform miracles on just ice, particularly if non-studded. If you really hit a patch of near-pure ice (without snow/powder) with some steering angle and just a little too much speed, there will be sliding regardless of the tire you're on.

I know this because I'm currently running Michelin X-Ice tires on my M3 that I daily commute, and just the other day I went over an overpass which curves down/leftward -- it was generally damp as it rained here recently, then the temperatures dropped to around freezing. I wasn't driving "aggressively", but had a hair too much speed coming over the crest of the overpass and the back end easily stepped out (was in MDM mode). I'm running a narrower square 245 set, so this certainly could have exacerbated the issue for the rear in non-snowy conditions (where a narrower tire in theory would be better in accumulating snow), but point is still there.

I love the fact that someone thought this deserves to be front page. There is a lesson to be learned here.

I feel bad for OP. The damage looks to be more than 50mph as OP states.

Streets are wild. Insurance rates are skyrocketing even for people with no incidents or claims. Every day I see a red light that’s run. Using the left turn lane to go straight and get the hole shot at a red light. Left lane people with no reason to be there. The list goes on and on.

G82Anxious sorry to hear about your loss and glad your OK. Was your G82 rwd or was—not that it would have mattered without winter tires.

Highly recommend for any one living in the northeast and driving a M to take a 5 day training at BMW M ICE ARJEPLOG. Totally worth it!

Such a polarizing front page news post. For all of us that did ED back in the day, it was mandatory to rent winter tires when taking delivery after October 15th.

Glad you are OK and I am glad some here care about feelings, but this is a learning moment.

Yes, winter tires may not have prevented this, but you would have had the best possible chance of avoiding it.

There is a reason BMW has that annoying DING at low temps. We all hate it, but it's there to remind us of conditions where black ice is possible.

Driving on max-performance summer tires in those conditions is negligence. Period.

I'm not posting this to make you feel bad, but quite the contrary. Consider yourself very lucky no one else was involved and injured. Life would suck a lot more than it does right now over a bruised ego and a vehicle that can be replaced.

People aren't bashing. They are calling out the fact that this was a mistake, no different than driving while impaired. We all make mistakes and you did not do it on purpose but do learn from it and move on.

Find that hard to believe.
Your right, I just made it up sorry about that …
I could go a drive right now and film it it that makes you happy, then you’d believe.
Not a single car I know has winter tyres on it, not one. I never see local cars with wheels swapped in winter.
Do you think I just waste my time posting lies on forums?

People are right to call out the OP. Driving on summer tires in the winter is not “a mistake”, it’s willful negligence. Winter tires aren’t some sort of niche, unknown, new technology. Would they have helped in this situation? I don’t know but driving on rock hard summer sport tires certainly didn’t help. Whatever happened to accepting personal responsibility? How are people supposed to learn if every time they do something dumb everyone else pats them on the back and says “Don’t worry, you did nothing wrong.” Thankfully the OP nor anyone else was injured, but come on people. If regularly drops below 50°F where you live, get winter tires or at least a set of all seasons.

Im sorry you had to go through this but glad you are ok. Dont pay any attention to those negative comments. Some people r just out here to pass judgement and make themselve feel better. Its black ice people, your winter tires rnt gonna save you. Its just sucks that you hit a black ice patch. And for the dude who thinks you are raising everyone else premiums, you might need to rethink your priorities. This would be the worst way to total your car. Its like blaming the person whose car got stolen for raising their premiums coz they didnt “protect” their car well. Gosh some people can be so insensitive !!!

Glad u r ok and cant to see you in ur G82 again !!!

Say again? PS4s's in Winter? Ok then.

Obviously glad your ok, taking some heat for using high performance summer tire in winter, and rightfully so. I could never imagine doing that.

First things first…glad to know that you’re OK. Car can be replaced, your health and well being can’t.
Second…great testament to the safety of our cars!
Few years ago an idiot rammed my wife’s SUV (2017 X3) and freaking TOTALED it when she was taking our boys to school.
Thank God…they WALKED away (literally) from that. Next day, got her an X5 and she has had another since & now and X6.
As long as I’m healthy and can work…she’s driving BMW SUVs!

Glad you’re OK.

Winter tires make a massive difference, even on black ice. Fact.

I got caught in about 1” of snow in Milwaukee on PSS many years ago on my E90. First, turn traction control off. It’s like driving around in 4WD. Keeps your speed lower so if you spin it or go into a ditch, it’s not nearly as disastrous.

That’s of course if you’ve got driving skills. As an HPDE instructor…one observation is despite cars getting better and faster the drivers are getting worse and worse. 90% rely on traction control by my estimate.

But this is why I drive BMWs…especially my wife and daughter. Despite the questionable styling, interior, etc…they are still some of the safest cars out there.

Its black ice people, your winter tires rnt gonna save you. If you have driven with these tires through the winter and did alright, the tires r fine. Just because “you did fine” doesn’t mean you made a smart decision. It means you’re lucky. Along with everyone else that was on the road with you while you were on tires that manufacturers specifically say DO NOT USE.

Glad OP is alive and ok.

Glad you're ok but you better learn from this lesson and get winter tires next time.

I wonder if the insurance company will inspect the tires, if they will you might have issues with them.
Agreed, 200%. I'm way upstate in New York and I won't be caught out in anything under 45 degrees on PS4S.
