Dream M4 [Gone in the blink of an eye]

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
So before these graphic images. I want everyone to know I am fairly ok. Mentally I am distraught that my baby is gone. Basically what happen is I am driving on my way to work and it's about 25-28 degrees outside and well...in the blink of an eye...black ice caused me to spin out and the rest is history...Please be careful out there.

That sucks, glad you're okay! Hopefully you weren't driving on summer tires at those temps??

Brand new set of PS4S were placed on them in July, Never swap them out for winter tires as I drive <50MPH on my way to work. This is the first time I ever spun out on black and it's forever etched into me.

I'm not sure winter tires would've saved you from black ice anyway. Glad you're ok, the car can be replaced.

So very sorry this happened to you, but relieved to hear that you were able to walk away from this. Similar thing happened to my parents last week when they were driving...hit a patch of black ice and now the car is totaled. They were able to walk about but were a bit shaken.

What are you doing driving on a summer only tire in winter in new York? Under 40 degrees summer tires basically have no traction and the rubber is hard as a rock.
Glad you're ok but you better learn from this lesson and get winter tires next time.

I wonder if the insurance company will inspect the tires, if they will you might have issues with them.

Glad you’re okay. Yikes!
In my early twenties, I spun out going 20 mph in update NY. It was in wintry snow conditions and in a residential area. Miraculously, I didn’t hit anything. I drove my ‘87 Supra from California to NY on summer tires. Funny thing is I grew up working at my parents’ tire shop and I knew a thing or two about tires. All season tires, at a minimum, are a must in freezing/cold climate but snow tires are highly recommended. True, nothing will help on black ice. Rock on ice>>>bad joo joo!

Sorry to hear about your car but man driving summer tires in those temps is insane. Insurance might give you a hard time with coverage because of this too.

Always use winter tires/wheels in temps under 40 even if it’s sunny outside.

Glad you’re ok! I’ve done something similar about 30 years ago in upstate New York on all season tires driving an old battleship Lincoln Town Car. Black ice is nothing to take lightly! Can’t understand those out there who want to make you out to be the a$$hole for driving YOUR car they way YOU want to.

I’ve been waiting to put my summer tires on….this makes me wonder if I should hold out until April. Virignia winters aren’t like ny but it’s still dropping well below 45 degrees overnight.

Dude that sucks, glad you are ok. Got to pay attention to recommended temps for tires. I just moved to Colorado from SoCal in my B7 Alpina and I wanted new All Seasons but was told since the car has 21s on it there were no options for all weathers beside for the front. So I got a new set of Pilot Sports and was told it wouldn’t make a difference and he was exactly right, I was slipping and sliding leaving Discount Tire. Pissed me off BMW will send an AWD to Alpina let them put 21s on a car and I cannot even drive it in winter. I do so much better in my 911 with All Seasons it’s RWD also. Moral of the story just park the next one in cold temps or invest in proper tires, it sucks to see this. Sorry bro glad u ok.

look, i know it’s not the overall concern here that everyone is okay, and im sorry this happened

but, u *have* to be kidding us with the summer rubber. what did you hit to demolish ur car if u were going below 50mph?

i just hope nobody else hit that “black ice”

Glad you’re OK! If it’s any consolation, pull out those carbon buckets and I’ll buy them so you can re-coup some funds. Another white g82 in NY . Getting another g82? That vanity plate is fresh 👀

Sorry to see this OP. I know what it can be like. People just don't understand until it happens to them. Glad you're okay and hopefully your insurance company takes care of you.

When I was 21 back in 2012 I was in college and somehow managed to save up $8,500 to buy a 2004 325xi with over 100k miles on it. I was elated to have another BMW after I totaled my 2004 525i 2 years prior.

I had the car for two months when I was out to dinner with some friends one night and it started snowing pretty hard while we were eating. My 3 series had xDrive and 4 relatively new Continental all season run flats.

A local town employee came into the restaurant and told everyone that if they were parked in the street they had to move their cars because the blows were starting to clear the roads. Of course I parked in the street. They wants us to move to an auxiliary parking lot behind the restaurant.

I hopped in my car, drove straight, made one right hand turn, and then I made my next left the car just started spinning. Completely lost all control in the fresh powder doing less than 20 mph, spun two or 3 times while doing downhill, and right up a curb and into a telephone pole. Car was totalled.

No matter how prepared you think you are, something can always happen when you're least expecting it. It's unfortunate that things like this have to happen before we learn how dangerous even a very small amount of snow can be. Again, happy you're okay.

Now about those buckets...

Glad you walked away from this. The speed means nothing, you can still lose traction at 10 mph. If you're driving a car in Midwest/East winters where temps are sub 40s, you need winter tires. It's even more important if the roads have any precipitation in addition to just being cold. At 40F, a summer tires (like mps4s/ss, etc. level) is only going to have at most 50% of it's maximum traction available. It'll be exponentially lower with even a little bit of wet mist on the ground or sub 40f temps. Below that level the rubber gets hard like a hockey puck and will develop micro cracks that will actually hinder performance in the summers. You shouldn't even store summer tires in a cold environment let alone use them.

This probably wouldn't have happened on the right tires but we'll never know for sure. Take it as a lesson learned. Get yourself a second set of wheels if you live in NY. Or just swap tires in October/March-April every year

Glad your ok OP
I see the tyre police have arrived in force.
Here in Scotland those temps are not unnormal most winter days, and I never ever hear of anyone swapping wheels on their performance cars.
You take it easy and respect the conditions, but black ice shows zero respect back.
Some really shitty comments getting thrown your way, pretty sad the people like to just stamp all over you when your obviously down.

Good luck.

I planned not to go out yesterday night because of the rapid temperature drop after raining.
Black ice is very common afterwards.
I'm glad that you and your family are safe.
