There should be a grill mesh for protection

This is after only 2k miles. Granted the CS does see high speeds frequently but, still, the radiator is already beat up after only 2k miles. I mean there small rocks stuck everywhere still. Seems like there should be some mesh for protection. was walking up to the car and noticed it and was wondering what that was. Got close enough and realized. 😭😭😭

That does suck. Good thing it isn’t too hard to add some.

Cooling channels look fine, that’s the important part. Nothing is going to stop those small rocks. You’re gonna have that issue on any car, mesh or not. Just enjoy the car man…

A mesh small enough to stop those rocks is also going to cut your air flow over those radiators down by at least 80%.

This.
For god's sake, avoid off-road, otherwise enjoy the car.

If you get enough mashed bugs on the radiator, they will cushion the rocks

I think for me the most annoying aspect of this is having dead baked bugs on the radiator and it's so difficult to wash them off.... last year a road trip (with X3M), I drove through some Utah road covered with stink bugs, they got all over the car, the smell lasted a good 4 days.

Although you do have to remove the front bumper to install, there is an OEM lower "stone guard" 17-11-9-882-366 that matches the top that comes from factory. Not sure why this wouldn't be included on the CSL. I mounted this when I switched to the CSL grill.

Pretty sure none of the auto cars have this. How did you fasten the lower grill? On my list of things to do.

I don't really care as much about the esthetics of it as much as I'm checked concerned that I'll eventually have a large enough rock hit to actually damage the thing and then cause issues. Clearly, if this is happening at only 2k miles, the car gets driven proper.

Just used black zip ties as there’s no real place to mount it that I could see. The zip ties are not visible at all and it doesn’t flap around or anything.

Perfect - that's my understanding as well. Thanks!

On my previous cars, once in a while, I would get a long thin wooden kabob skewer from the kitchen and use it to clean and straighten some of the bent radiator gaps.

Probably not necessary, but easy to do, when I didn’t have anything more important to do on the car, and a Stella or two makes it enjoyable!

I’ll drink to that.

Did you install the top part as well? I am planning to get the bottom part soon.

Would it fit well on 2023 M3 comp Xdrive?

The radiator(s) core support and layout is the same across the S58 car platforms, so it should fit the M3. See above link.

If I end up replacing front grill I will get this. For the price it’s worth it.

Good find, I just ordered this. Bumpers coming off this weekend for different grilles and lower cooling ducts

Had the Mishimoto heat exchanger installed recently - it comes with a rock guard for the top.

I had the shop install the stock top rock guard on the bottom over the transmission cooler, fits exact (size wise). Zip tied it on.

So that picture is of the OEM rock guard installed just on the bottom? And would work on a 2022 M3 XDrive Comp?

The only thing that has me thinking twice about the zip ties, is, I’d think the engine heat would eventually make them brittle and you’d have to remove the bumper all over again. But that’s just me, spitballing. I have actual grill mesh and I’m thinking about replacing it with the Oem lower plastic part.
