CA legal tuning?

Are there any CA legal, meaning CARB compliant, tunes available?

I think piggy back like Racechip or JB4 should be fine.

No way you could pass smog with it on though

Nothing is legal in California unfortunately.
Even flavored cigarettes.

Technically, it doesn't.
But, visual inspection will throw a red flag and you can always turn it off via the App or use the bypass plug.

Do they really check everything under the hood?

No...nor are they paid enough to care. A JB4 will have no impact whatsoever. All they do during a smog check for modern cars is plug into the OBD to make sure there aren't any codes.

No one with a G80 will need a smog until at least 2030 so I don't know what the concern is.

JB4 is emissions legal for the B58 motors and the S58 is similar but I don't know if they have stickers for it yet. By the time I have an emissions test if I even still have the car I'll remove it.

They do look, it is part of the visual inspection.

I hold my cars for 10 years or more so I’m interested in 2030 and beyond.

I've just completed my emissions last week. I have a bootmod3 tune and returned everything to stock. I failed my first test because the sensors weren't ready. I had to follow bmw drive cycle introductions to get it ready than passed after doing this. I retuned my car right after.

Do you just revert the tune, then remove the entire bm3 harness from under the hood? I was worried that CA OBD testing would be able to detect previous tunes.

There is no bm3 harness. The tune is done through the obd port. No they can't detect previous tunes. Only takes a few minutes to upload the new tune.

Those of you who do this with BM3, just DO NOT pick the option to relock the DME. Just put a stock map on it, that’s it.

I don’t know much about bm3 so forgive me. But you can just flip between stock and tuned just through the OBD port? I’m assuming you need a flashed ecu for bm3?

I vote bm3 and just flash it back to stock from your phone.

You will need an unlocked ECU through Femto (this is the only way). Then you can flash BM3 using the OBD port and an app on your phone.

It is a process to get the unlock but once that is done every flash takes about 30 seconds. Takes longer to put a battery tender on than to actually flash the car.

I would argue 8 years emissions exemption on new cars in CA is much less stupid than several other states.

Considering after 8 years you can’t even run an aftermarket intake, it’s pretty stupid.

Was going to mention that new cars in CA don't have to worry for 8 years on the emissions side. However, technically nearly any modification is still not kosher.

Yep, technically and legally. You must square your personal morals with bending/breaking emission laws and the risk of getting state reffed by a curious CHP officer or pop up smog checkpoints. Sounds like OP is not willing to do that, respect, but unfortunately no products in the past several years have pursued a CARB cert. I think it’s a dead option, at least for anything that would actually add power or sound.

I could flip that and say it’s pretty stupid for CA to have virtuallly zero emission enforcement for the first 8 years. That’s pretty attractive to those who like to mod new cars.
