I would always read in posts like the above, 'oh I don't see myself getting rid of the m3 until I can get a 911' or 'I will keep m3 until I can upgrade to a 911' etc....but truly I always wondering WTF is the big deal with 911's.

So a year or so back I got one. 992 911 4S. Great car but no different than numerous others that could keep me entertained for no more than 6 months - 1 year. I got rid of it after 6 months and got myself a v10 R8...which I kept about a year. Then had a M850 and F Type R a the same time for about 6 or so months (m850) and 4'ish months the F Type until I got the new G80 M3 which I currently have (since 4'ish months).

I REALLY don't understand the hype with 911's. I feel like it's the image of it that appeals to people and don't get my wrong, it's a nice driving car but certainly not the 'be all end all' everyone seems to make it out to be. At 200K that I spent on it, it didn't even feel much 'special' since they are so common where I live. I enjoy the M3 more than I enjoyed that in many ways. Not saying M3 is a better car, just a different car, but I don't think anyone's life is going to change dramatically if they do 'upgrade' from M3 to the 911 like people always seem to make it sound like.

One wonderful thing about the 911 was that it was the only car I didn't lose any money on changing out of it so frequently and on one odd occasion due to market timing I made 15K on my AMG GTS. But my Aston Vantage left me with an almost 40K hit when I got rid of it after about a year. So one thing I can say about the 911 is that the value retention prospect is unbeatable for sure.

But honestly, if I am spending 200K+ on a car, I want it to be somewhat rare and make me feel special which the 911 just didn't do, but the R8 and Aston did. The m3 cost me around 150K with all the neg I had accumulated (133K asking) and yes it also doesn't make me feel 'special' even though I see less of it than the 911, but at least I feel like I didn't spend 200K+ for it. So it's a great car for what it is in the bracket it is in.

I guess I am fixating on the emotional/raw appeal aspect of the 911 only and now the great driving abilities and performance (which are excellent bar none), but for me the car has to have that visceral, emotional appeal that turns heads. Maybe it was a simple 4S and not a Turbo S or a GT 911 and that's why. I do plan to get either a Turbo S or a GT at some point so will answer that doubt too. But at the GT3 price point my preference would be to get a Lamborghini or Ferrari of some kind first.

Anyway, all that to say in my long winded way, there is no reason for anyone to hum and haw over 911 if you're rolling in M3 and similar vehicles anyway because the 'jump' is not all what it's made out to be. At least wasn't for me. Do I miss the 911? Sometimes yes, but ONLY reason is it's a vehicle I didn't see myself losing $ on after driving for a while. Even the R8 gave me a bit of a hit in my 1 year ownership but man driving that felt more of an occasion each time than the 911 ever felt.

Just some food for thought.
You got a 992 non-GT 911. The prices are through the roof and the engagement is at an all time low. Try a 997 GTS, and air cooled car, maybe a 991 GT3, Cayman GTS, etc.

I stuck with it however, and now at around 7k miles in, it feels great. The linkages have loosened up, clutch is more predictable, and it's an absolute joy. Sure BMW could have done more to make it a better experience out of the factory, but after giving it some time, it really settles into a fun experience.
Maybe I need to give it another chance, but the car I test drove was used and had about 7k miles. I didn't care much about the rubbery shift, but my issues has always been with the clutch and BMW's clutch delayed valve. Dating back to my e90 335i I hated that thing and after 20k miles I could never get the 1-2 shift consistently or smoothly. It's what made me get a F82 M4 DCT which I got bored of quickly cause I missed that manual engagement. At least now I know I'll never be happy with an auto. It's frustrating because I drove the new manual Supra and much prefer the manual there, though the 1-2 shift was also tricky at first the clutch is very springy but didn't take too long before I could get it smoothly and consistently.

I usually only keep cars for 3 years, and I am coming up on 2 with this one. I'll definitely wait till LCI, and I may order another M4 next year, but I am thinking of going to a G83. Otherwise, not sure, I still really enjoy my G82, especially the color.

Ah yeah the infamous CDV. I've gotten to a point where I've mastered the 1-2 shift... but will probably still look to delete my CDV come spring time. But overall the shift action in the g80 is an improvement over the e9X 6mt.

We got a G81 AWD Comp Touring and it is easily the most all-round, capable, luxurious and high performance car we’ve had. My wife is switching out her Macan GTS for it and it will become her car and our family long-termer for hopefully the next 7+ years until we feel compelled to go electric. It’s a keeper.

I agree. I got bored during early pandemic and ordered a manual 992 C2S and sold it before 1000 miles...way too noisy and impractical compared to the F80 M3 I was coming from...it was wicked fast and handled great tho! Way different cars and I found I'm just not a 911 guy.

I've had a lot of cars over the past 15 years, including most of the cars that enthusiasts say "you have to own one at least once" such as the 911, S2000, Miata, and Corvette. I've found something to like about each car that I've owned, and I've also learned something. In my view, my car ownership history has given me a good perspective on what I actually like and value. I am a much more informed buyer than I was 15 years ago. So when I bought my G82 6MT black sapphire over fiona red, it was a very deliberate purchase rather than an impulsive one. It was with a full understanding of what I want in a vehicle. Some of my previous car purchases were made with me just trying something out to see if I'd like it, but this one was made knowing what I wanted. You just know when something feels right. I'm completely satisfied. So I definitely foresee owning this car longer than I've ever owned any other car before it.

My lease residual percentage wasn't that high (or that low) so the buyout price was an amount I could just pay rather than consider financing it (I'm just an DINK IT manager, not someone who could afford a GT3).

What I got hit with was a huge pull towards giving the X-Drive G82 a try. There are a couple of not-terribly-priced 2022's available in my area. I figured if I didn't end up liking it, I could swap back to an MT down the road. I even sent my sales human an email to explore the concept.

After a few days of no response on the email (no idea if he was actually working or not), I decided to just be done with the question and sent in my payoff a month early. Then we got snowed and iced in for a week. The city does nothing with our local roads and it was an utter mess. Could I have taken my car out during that week safely? Probably. But with folk sliding down our road, I just didn't trust that I'd be able to safely react to other people in it. I went to the store while the roads were piles of slush and random ice on Thursday, and the car was very sketchy until I made it to the main roads.

And then everything melted on the roads yesterday and I was able to go for a good long drive after work. All was well again and I was left with nothing buy joy after [...]
I’m with you a hundred percent, especially in comparison to the P cars. Also, maybe rent one on turo for couple of days. I did that and found that the speed and finesse of the autos didn’t make up for the lack of something to do between stoplight and stoplight.

I’ve thought about selling it to get something I can bring my dog everywhere with. He’s a rottie and there’s just no way with the M4 unless you really DGAF about the car. Considered an X5 but I think I might keep the M4 and turn the Z4M into a dog car. Remove the passenger seat and build some custom dog seat bolted to the floor that we can hit the town in. I think that’s the play.

Here he is enjoying beach day:

I agree on new 911’s, but GT cars are extremely special, 997 GT3 is my favorite car ever….Air cooled 911’s are awesome as well. I will never understand someone buying a 992s / GTS / 4S for the $$$, when used GT cars exist for ~ the same $$$. Porsches are built to last go buy an old GT car, is always my advice.

But at GT3 price point, my personal preference would be an exotic like a Lambo/Ferrari. But knowing me I am sure I’ll cycle through GT3 at some point as well. I just told myself that I gotta stick to my current cars for a couple of years at least before I start thinking about swapping again. Not quite sure if I will get rid of the M3 any time soon, but the next addition will be some type of an exotic so very possibly a GT3. I have been tempted by a 2016 purple GT3 with only 6k
Km’s near me listed for 250K for quite some time but keep controlling myself. Lol

I went through a phase of buying a car every couple of years or so but right now I can't see me getting rid of my M3 anytime soon. My wife wants a new car now so that affects my decision too. Sometimes after I make a payment and then look at it sitting in the garage, I contemplate selling and then I go for a drive and kill that notion.

Will drive my G82 for a while, as there's nothing else that's truly intriguing me in this class of car.

Next for me is as much GT3 I can afford, from any generation.

However, I understand in 2025 that Porsche may be putting the naturally-aspirated GT3 engine in the 992.2 GTS, with a manual. If so, then I'd "settle" for a GTS. But the dealer markups will be insane on those too.

It very much is and to be honest i wouldnt be here if the GT4 didnt end up being a lemon. I honestly loved that car and everything that it offered. For me it was the perfect car. And while it was definitely more focused on the track side of things, it did the daily duties quite well surprisingly. Is the M4 a better daily? Yes it is by a long shot, but the GT4 was still quite amazing even as a daily. I miss that car so much.

I'd rather have a Cayman than a 911. I'd also have something Italian over any Porsche.
