Might be a dumb question but curious...
I have to awkwardly reach around to grab the seat belt in the M4 (never sat in an M3 and that little placeholder on the back of the seat is eh), what's the ease of seatbelt accessibility in the G80?

I absolutely agree that the new cars have so much going for them and I'm a fan, that doesn't make the old ones irrelevant IMO. A new G80 will spank my US spec E36 M3 in every manner possible (amazing that these cars have literally double the hp and torque), it certainly doesn't make it irrelevant IMHO. I'm more than happy revving my E92 M3 to 8400 RPM, as I am enjoying the crazy torque of an M2C. I do concur that these old M cars can be money pit and require attention, but all 3 of my M cars, which are drivers and were bought used costs the same as 1 stripper M3 G80. Is 1 brand new M3 "better" than having the ability to experience 3 other cars? For me, no. Having said that, as long as BMW still offers a 6MT option, there's an excellent chance it'll make it's way into the garage and then I'm retiring from the chase But this is why I love threads like this. I really enjoying actual owners comparing their experiences with various cars.

Yes, cars will always get faster and hold the road better as advanced technology will continue to produce impressive acceleration and roadholding stats. But the experiences these past cars produce are oftentimes unmatched, even though they're moving slower and the tires lose grip faster. Being the fastest from Point A to Point B doesn't necessarily mean you're having the most fun, unless the absolute fastest track time is the aim Last edited by KevinGS; 04-06-2021 at 09:42 AM.. |

Thanks for the review, OP.
I'm a hardcore manual guy, but not necessarily a compact car fanatic. I would've bought a new F80 ZCP w/ 6MT had it been available. All the leftover '18 ZCPs were gone and I didn't like the F82's proportion. I stuck with the M2C, and love the car so far. I drive a lot. Roughly 32k miles/yr. When the time comes, I'll be most likely switching to the G80. I like the high-tech options and nice interior as the OP, so it seems like the G80 is a no brainer for me. IOMG is an amazing color BTW. When I was studying transportation design back in college, rendering a sketch in green was a big no no. Who would've thought it looked this good... Thanks again for the in-depth review. |

OP, thanks for the write-up. The rest of you, thank you for your a) insightful or b) amusing comments. Except for that one guy. We all know who that was. I had an OG M2 6MT and it was just too much for me. Too loud, too uncomfortable, and did I mention how loud it was? I think the G82 may be for me.

My F87 was even louder with the Fabspeed DP and Dinan exhaust. It was 108db outside and 93db inside on a cold start. It was fun for a while, but being a new dad made me want to have something a little more discreet. The first time we drove the G80, my wife (who loves driving the M2) said "this car is so much more comfortable. Now that you're excited for a new car I want to tell you I hated riding passenger in your M2 it felt like my kidneys were getting punched and it wasn't fun for me at all." |

Interesting timing for this thread. I just came from the Dealer (I have an M2) and saw for the first time a Black M4 in the flesh. I swear this car must be the most unphotogenic car ever created.
It looks way better in person than pictures. It was a black competition and the stance of the car and front end actually looked really good. (It didn't have smart cruise so that ugly offcenter sensor wasn't there) I'm looking forward to seeing a M3 in person. I'm torn as I love my DCT M2 and was planning on buying it out after the lease and adding simple mods (Wagner intercooler, fabspeed catted DP and a stage 2 tune) but might go for the manual transmission base M3. Nice write up btw.

I think those Manual Base M3s are going to be the sweet cherry of the lineup.

After a month and a half, I have zero regrets. Which is weird. I tend to second guess my car purchases pretty quickly.

Thank you for your review! I have a M2C as well and is considering the G80 for my next vehicle. This is certainly helpful. Enjoy your new M3 in good health!

Update:
After a month and 20 days (and endless amounts of busy), I finally got the break-in service done this morning. I was only at 1000 miles, but the next couple of weeks are going to be too busy to be sure I could take it in close to 1200 miles but not over. On the drive home, I finally just hit it going onto a freeway entrance ramp. 2nd up to the redline at about 75% throttle, and then a fast shift into 3rd onto the freeway. Gods. What a thing. Had to come down quite a bit to merge into traffic. I'm not going to compare this car to others any further, everyone else is doing plenty of that. She showed me what she is in that brief moment, and it's more than enough. |

You see, when I got to take my G82 on the test drive I felt that the size and driving feel felt so much like my old e39 I was immediately at home. Getting on it it was of course different, but interesting somebody feels the same.

It was a "this is what I've been trying to find for 8 years of driving German Beasts" moment. My regret for spending so long without a manual is huge. I'm almost sorrowful at what's happened to the industry in it's constant numbers fight that caused the fastest cars to have to leave manuals behind.
But, of course, you can't advertise a "fun rating" in a magazine the same way you can a 'Ring time. |

Any initial misgivings I had about this particular manual faded over time. The unit itself had a clear "break-in" period and it didn't take long for my reflexes to sync with it. It still isn't the best manual I've ever driven, but it's fine and dandy in its own way. The only downside is that it makes me angry that I wasted 8 years trying to be OK with automatics (and DCT's). The only other cars that really interest me as a "one-car solution" in the same way that my car has proven itself to be are the Blackwing 6MT siblings but they both have significant negatives for me (the backseats are smaller in the CT4 and I carry passengers often, and the CT5 is too big for my side of the garage, among other negatives). I think if I had to spec out a new one, the only changes I'd make to what I currently have would be interior/exterior color (I love IOMG and the black interior is fine, but I probably wouldn't do the same colors twice), and I would spring for Full Leather and possibly the carbon exterior pack. I wouldn't get the carbon buckets, I love my seats. It's also possible that I'd just do Red over Black and not change ANY options to keep the cost down. I haven't felt like I'm missing anything and my car's MSRP is 25% lower than a lot of the cars our fine G8x friends own...and that's not a bad thing at all. |

Loved this entire thread! amazing review. I am currently stuck between getting the 2023 M2 or 2023 M3 both are 6MT. I just can't decide which one I like better. I have a 535d as my daily so I don't necessarily need the M3s space but it does have the interior and comfort that I want. but at the same time I already have my 5 series so do I need 2 large cars?? Do you see where im stuck ??? having driven both the m2 ( even though it was the previous model) and the g80 M3...do you have a preference over either?? I've always dreamed of an M3 so my heart is telling me go with that, but I heard the resale on the M2 will be higher (although I don't plan on selling for about 4 years if at all). But any insights on this would help me out, I think my mind is made with the M3 but just the M2 is in my mind.
