I think some of the haters are going to need some hugs today. This was not supposed to happen. They knew it would not happen. But……………..it happened.

Customer demand for emotional BMW M products still high

With a total of 39,055 units sold in the first quarter of 2022, BMW M GmbH’s sales were up slightly on the previous year (+3,1%), despite supply shortages. Demand remains strong. The high-performance M3 and M4 models newly released onto the market last year continue to enjoy great popularity.

I'm curious how 6% decline compares to the industry average.
Don't know about worldwide industry numbers, but US is down over 12% Q1 y/y. Source: goodcarbadcar.net. Here's some snapshots. BMW/Mini are one of the gainers along with Mazda and of course Tesla. Lot of losers. (Click on the photos if on mobile and you can see the names and YTD change y/y. I assume these are updated for Q1.)

M perf or M sport...whatever. Including them in M sales numbers is lame. Fluff the numbers.

Notice how the license plate doesn't cut right through the middle of the grill?

Lol so many posters cheerleading for BMW like its a sports team. You shouldn't just blindly shill for everything they do. Even the most passionate sports fans routinely shit on their team.

To me more sales is a negative. The more popular BMWs are, the less I care to own one. They have become too common and have lost that uniqueness factor. The M division and their insistence on continuing to produce ICE + MT is what still keeps me interested in the brand. I'm looking forward to when the G87 M2 launches!

More sales is a negative? Interesting logic. The good news is if sales are modestly increasing, BMW can continue innovating and maintain quality. I don't really care how many BMWs are on the road, they've never been THAT unique. If you want to be super unique, get an Aston or Alfa.

It's amazing how well BMW has performed in manufacturing and delivering cars relative to other automakers.

After owning other brands, you can see the distinction of quality for BMW is the manufacturing. The brand has been criticized as "over-engineered," and I realize BMW's have quality issues after 5 years of ownership in many cases, but that being said the build quality is one of the best up there with Porsche perhaps, at least for their higher-end vehicles.

Agree M brand has been diluted, the counter-argument of course being MPG standards and the consumer mentality around M cars. Pure M cars are now bonkers-level track performance that's hard to handle on the daily. 10 years ago I had enjoyed 15 mpg on an M3. That's a non-starter for many people now at $5-$7 a gallon. Certain M cars, such as the X3, are still enjoying such low MPG.

I would argue Teslas are becoming vastly less unique each quarter, and yet the consumer mentality is EV's are more and more of a necessity.

I wonder if the decline has anything to do with the fact most models looks like a dogs dinner. BMW's design is shockingly bad these days and way overpriced especially on M models.
My last 6 cars where BMW's but I'd struggle to pick anything I like in the range now.
