I’d be asking for my money back if I bought an *allocation* without a defined timeframe from clown “broker” who sells a dealers phone number and then just gives excuses.

Date allocation requested: May 28th , 2021 2. Model: M3 Competition xDrive 3. Country: USA , CT Last edited by jpsimon; 06-08-2021 at 01:07 PM.. |

I guess I was lucky. I decided to buy one at the end of February, so I started calling dealers (closest first) asking whether they currently had an allocation for a base model car. There are a lot of dealers in Northern California. If they said they could get one or started talking about MSRP plus a premium, I thanked them and gave them my phone number. I said they should call me when they had an allocation at MSRP. I was clear that if they could get an allocation, I would "buy one today". On 2/26, I found a dealer who had what I wanted, and I sent him a Build-ID (from BMWUSA Build Your Own) by email. He prepared an order the same day and I gave him a credit card number for a deposit. 5 days later, it went to 150 status. I needed to make one trip there to fill out a credit application and get an appraisal on my previous car, although I sold it elsewhere and paid cash. It took 12 days to complete production, and then 10 days to get to the port and get onto a ship. The trip to California took a month, as expected. 3 days after the ship docked, I had the car home.

Happy for rak99! I wish someone had knowledge when allocations will open up - but whether it will be at all dealers - I doubt it. But who knows?

F80SRT: Curious to see when you receive allocation - also put mine in for my wife's M3 6MT on June 1. Dealers really have no clue when they receive allocations - at the mercy of BMW HQ - I think.

I do think there is some element of properly setting expectations, and my dealer is trying hard to not upset me by "selling" me on some date when they really don't know. When we put the order together, he actually went in and looked, just in case, to see if they had an allocation. So he was showing me the behind the scenes on allocations. Also explained how dealerships get allocations, but then "trade" with others (like CO wants more AWD and will trade with AZ dealerships). Not likely on the M3/4's (trading) |

Thanks - my dealer said same thing. Car specs go into the dealers "bank" - then they wait. As for trading - heard that too - but hard to imagine with dealers being competitive - especially with M3/M4's - it gets very far! Will keep you posted - plan in another week - at two weeks - to prompt my guy to see what he says. Won't do much - only make me feel better that I'm trying.

Hmm....worth bringing this up to my dealer - but will not hold out much hope. But thanks for letting me know it can work under the right circumstances. It's a cutthroat business - but what isn't?

Got an update today from my dealer... my allocation is here! He just needs to input my spec to the allocation in the BMW system and then will send me the build week/delivery estimate. Been told I'll receive details "early next week"

The allocation now being here will simply confirm my BMW production number (which I can use to track via Genius Live Chat) and my estimated delivery date - and it is these 2 pieces of information I will receive next week. For reference, my signed purchase order as submitted to BMW (this is different to a Vehicle Enquiry Report, which we call a Vehicle Quote here in UK):

May be a stupid question - but here goes: The allocations given in June are only for July builds? Meaning if you don't get allocation when they are given this month (just once a month?) - you have to wait until July for August builds??
