Tuning Questions- Noob

Hello I am new to this tuning bmw world. I have read a lot of the forum post and still trying to figure it out.

First step -
Source: Direct Femto unlock send it to Finland or 3rd party source.

Need to turn off all updates on car and mobile app.

Turn off highlights

Do you unhook battery prior to unplugging DME?

Label each plug of DME in sequential order (1,2,3,4)

Follow instructions and mail via DHL (cheaper for DHL and not a 3rd party shipping company)

Does it matter if I buy before or after BM3 license?

Second Step
BM3 bootmod
Source- various 3rd parties
VIN required for license
Need cable for laptop, smart phone or Wi-Fi adapter

Third Step
Choice A - out of the box staged tunes
Choice B - custom tune through various 3rd parties

Always disconnect the battery before disconnecting/reconnecting the DME.

For BM3 you need to plug the car in and activate the licence to the VIN of your car before sending off.

Custom tuning is a good idea if pushing past the more conventional Stage 2 setup, we or many other companies can offer it via BM3.

Thank you for the feedback.

If I go with a custom tune let’s say Paul Johnson -

1. Does he get a list of mods I have? Or does he remote tune and have the ability to see my car diagnostics in real time?

2. How do I receive his custom tune or any remote tuner?

I can't speak for anyone other than ourselves, but you tell us your modifications and then we make a base file and then you send us datalogs and we tweak the calibration to get the most out of your setup whilst being safe.

You request them via BM3 and receive them in the interface, you can see when there has been updates to a tune and download them.

I support local Businesses like OrlandoAutowerks in FL and @TristateBM3 in NYC who have done hundreds of cars + including friends. They have a great relationship with Femto so things move rather quick.

Yes definitely turn off the Privacy (Remote Software Update) section

Since it only takes 5 days in my experience I didn't disconnect the battery but you can if you want. (Cold climates will drain the battery quicker if you disconnect them seen it happen before)

I highly recommend the guys at OrlandoAutowerks or TristateBM3 as they will take care of your BM3 activation, step by step walk through and instructions on what to do every step of the way.

You can use same OBD Cable with a iPhone or USB-C adapter to Android as well. Laptop is great too uses the same OBD cable too. WiFi Adapter for datalogging and custom tuning will make life easier. Just remember ti disconect from precious Carplay if using only one phone as it wont be able to have 2 WIFI connections at the same time.

Always start with OTS map for a few weeks and plan out your Custom Tuning after getting a feeling for "what else, what more" you want to get out of the car.

PS.. I lived in NYC for 30yrs and moved to Orlando last year so my experience with these 2 companies are direct.

Smallest one possible that allows a inch or two of good padding all around. Box size really affects the price. I cut a box down a few inches and saved $80

I just purchased the bootmod3 license and registered my car on the app. I also downloaded the stock tune. I know registration is needed, but why does it have to be done before sending to femto?

it used to be needed for bm3 custom rom, its not needed anymore.

You can send the car to Femto before buying bm3, just make sure you select custom rom bm3 on femto's website.

Thanks! Last questions... does everyone pay through their bank or is Western Union OK too? Also, I selected the customRom option.... that means I can use the OTS tunes until I get custom tuned...... right?

I used wire transfer

You can use the regular OTS maps until you are tuned but why do that when you can select the multimap which is the same price as the regular map

Not sure exactly what you mean… when I look at the OTS tunes I see stage 0,1, and 2…. Then “multimap “ is an option when selecting fuel type. Is there a different muiltmap tune I am not seeing?

Sup Mike, I have a quick question and I trust you so figured I’d ask. If I start with an OTS BM3 map and then later want to do a custom rom would I have to send my dme in again? And if I do the unlock option for custom roms, I wouldn’t be able to use OTS maps?

Thanks!

No, you will not have to send your DME in again. I am running OTS multimaps until I have enough mods done to warrant getting a custom tune. I asked BM3 and some custom tuners the same question prior...

Hey guys , I’m also new to this world. I got a 23 g80 and had a few questions. I recently sent out my dme a few days ago for femto. The first question I had is about the OTA updates. Is it fine if I only disable them through the app ? Or do I need to do them in the car too ? And I have to do it in the car before I put my ecu back on right ? Also , I was on jb4 before and I don’t remember if I put it back to map 0 or not 😂 , so I’m literally worried how this will effect the unlock of my ecu or when I flash my car for bm3. I also didn’t buy the bm3 license yet. Is that okay or not ? Please answer if you have knowledge about this. I’m kinda freaking out 😅

I disabled them on the app and the car to be safe before sending the DME just to be safe.
