The exterior - the sides and rear are fine. Kind of conservative but the details are off. The door handles and the blue plastic stripping. It screams cheap. The copper color is unappealing IMO. The grille is just bad. Just ugly. Of all the big grill designs (Lexus AUDI etc) this is pretty close to a Genesis effort. I think because it clashes with the rest of the car and the front end. Like it's just tacked on. It needs to be integrated with the front.

Can't BMW make something that is objectively pretty? This is 'distinctive' and 'eye catching' but its not 'pretty'. There is zero desire in the exterior.

The interior - looks like it has nice materials but kind of looks sterile, cold and aloof. Especially as the whole interior has smooth shapes and then this ultra square sharp screen is stuck on. Juyst Yukck

I hate those stupid gauges.

After 100 years, there is no longer a need for a grill... and they are going to take this once in a century opportunity to give us a faux-grill like we are all idiots and might get confused and mistake the vehicle for a UFO or Cinderella pumpkin carriage?

Drop the FAKE grill!!

I do find that strange. I think their theory is that some people will love it and others will hate it. They don't want anyone in the middle. But then why do they try to convince the people who hate it to love it? It's confusing.

I personally don't like it. And it's not the grille. It's the whole thing.

Very happy they kept the iDrive knob and surrounding buttons, and a physical volume/track button. Overall BMW still does things more iteratively than other brands and that's something I prefer about them.

But still disappointed that these buttons are all flat/capacitive, it's a real step back in usability. The iDrive knob is so easy to use because you rest your hand on it and can use the shortcut buttons surrounding it just by feel.

It also makes no sense to remove the HVAC buttons and screen between the vents. The screen is so subtle and out of the way in current models and is the perfect place to display temp. And they went to the trouble of reducing the old HVAC layout with knobs to a single row of buttons right below the vents in current cars. So why get rid of that now? It doesn't make the interior look any better, it's harder to change the temp on a screen, and it wastes a whole row of space along the bottom of the main screen.

They clearly put more thought and effort into ergonomics than other brands, glad they kept a lot of the core things, but I wish they didn't give in to the trend on some of this.

I don't know why they insist to put a huge grill on a electric car. Just imagine that car without that obnoxious grill, much sharper, much prettier.

Polarizing design means half the prospective EV buyers in this specific luxury SUV demographic won’t like it. 300 miles in 2022 sounds pathetic when Tesla and others are working to do 4-500 by that time (again not literally right now but when this launches, 2022+). And lastly the presumable price of an X5 sized electric BMW, it’s got to be at least $85k+, I don’t see this being a massive hit.

I could be completely wrong, so we’ll see, I’m okay with that. I’m personally just disappointed in the design of all these new BMW’s. I seriously want us all to demand the head designer resign from BMW. This guy does not respect any of BMW’s historic design language, and his cars will look tacky and outdated 10 years from now (already tacky). At least the grill wasn’t the connected one we all complained about, so that’s progress. (You can literally see where the grille was supposed to connect, but now has flat black plastic in the grille connecting the two.)
This.

Mediocre range, mediocre acceleration, dividing looks. A masterclass in flop engineering.

Time to move onto other, truly innovative, brands.

I don't particularly like it, but it feels like this car could have been unveiled 8 or 9 years ago alongside the i3. It doesn't look very fresh to me. And it probably should have been unveiled that long ago. BMW could have been right there with Tesla in regards to platforms, range, and (probably to a lesser extent) charging and software. It's a shame they're playing catch-up now after the i3 and i8 were at least really solid steps in the right direction.

Someone on another forum said it looks like BMW combined the worst aspects from the i3 and the new M3...I can see that if you're not a fan of the G80.

without grill it look like someone without a teeth. I think that's fine on a low profile front (say model s), otherwise looks kind funny, I mean model 3/X/Y all look funny front to me, the only one got it right was model s

I agree with the resemblance to the i3. Maybe the pictures don't do it justice, but I am not impressed.

For what it is, I like it. But with the plasma laser electro spray stuff, seems like a lot of effort to build a single passenger Car. Sounds more like a lunar lander .

To make it look "distinct." Speaking of "distinct" and "eye-catching," why are they copying Nissan with that black strip on the D pillar?

It seems like they're just copying car brands now, Mercedes with the twin screens, Nissan with the black strip, failed attempt at large grilles like other car maker.

How many conflicting colors and patterns and angles and materials can you put in one car? I suppose BMW engineers have found out.

If it's priced at $40k (ha!) then it will redeem itself. Otherwise it should be renamed the iAnxietyAttack.

I made a previous post where I was very lukewarm. I thought about it some more and I think it grew on me. As a former i3 owner, this feels like a more mature version of that car. Still not a fan of the grill, but I'm warming up to the rest of the car.

The grilles are here to stay. I admire BMW for recreating their design language, much to the chagrin of some people in the peripheral. They are definitely thinking forward.

Yes, I think that has been confirmed.

The VW ID.3/ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq don't have a frunk either (even though they are built on the MEB platform), not sure about the E-Tron and EQS.
