Crack in top of headlight housing. Defect or something else?

After the yearly service on my 2022 g80 xdrive comp I noticed my right headlight had condensation in the morning or when it rained. I took it to the BMW service dept and they found a crack on the top of the housing underneath the hood. There is no other damage anywhere near it or anywhere on the car. The car has never been in an accident. They resisted that it was a defect. They will have the head service person look at the photos tomorrow. My question is this a defect or if it is damage how in the heck could this have happened? It is in a weird spot. Photos included. Thanks.

I would push them as some kind of defect. It’s under the hood and not on an area that could easily be damaged. What do they think you would have done, hit it with a hammer? Moreover there are no impact marks.

Expect resistance. Be reasonable and calm but firm.

Assuming you didn’t actually hit it with a hammer…

That's a really weird spot for a crack. I wonder if they dropped a tool on it.

When I was typing the "hit it with a hammer" thing, I was wondering the same.

Or maybe leaned on it too hard when working on the service?

Either way I'd say "it didn't do this before the service, it does it now, either way it's on you guys for damage or just a defect. Figure out how you want to pay for it but I expect it to be replaced because clearly it's not from external damage I did".

Certainly an odd place for a crack. Is there any stress on the housing at that location? Can the crack be sealed/repaired?

The tool thought is a good one. What’s the dealerships procedure for covering the car (mostly to avoid scratching the paint) while working on it?

I would take a look inside their shop before I spoke with the Service Manager.

And a ‘defect’ would mean warranty and BMW would pay for it vs damage when being serviced which would be the dealership. BMW knows how often there are ‘defects’ with the headlight housing and a crack like this one, I’m assuming, is unusual.

No stress at that point. More and more I think it was a tool.
