That was my rationale as well. The only downside is the increased weight that comes with the AWD system.

RWD and MT! I made the biggest mistake in my car enthusiast life by getting my M2 with a DCT. Don't need AWD as I live in Southern California and don't drive aggressively on the street.
On track, I don't want or need the crutch of AWD nor the added weight which of course still be there even if you turn it to RWD only mode. Consumables are expensive |

Sold my F90 M5 and got a ‘19 X5 for the family, leaving a spot for a G80 MT. Planning to mod it and take it right to track

The no AWD/MT thing is ridiculous. There is something genuinely special about a powerful, manual, AWD vehicle. I'm in a 2014 MT Audi S4 APR stage 2 right now and it is the tits. The transmission does just fine with ~~475HP and its based on a 7 year old design.
I would say the engineers are lazy but they aren't, they're just overengineering the s*** out of the comfort and convenience side of the M division :/

I was hoping for some sort of AWD/6MT combo, but seeing as there won't be one, I think I'm going to pass on the next gen M3.

My wife's F80 M3 CP is an undeniably fun and practical car. My F82 M4 is slightly less practical and just as much fun. I grew up in Michigan in a family with four kids and RWD station wagons served us just fine, long before there were AWD SUVs. Of course none of those vehicles were even remotely fun!

We live completely different lives. I rarely drive in the rain, never tow, or "haul a lot of weight". Trucks haul a LOT of weight and they're not AWD. I prefer my cars way more on the side of fun, which is why we also have a Z4 M Roadster. Different strokes...

Anyway, I think we're saying the same thing. I would never get an ///M car in awd any more than I would get an SUV/Wagon in RWD. One's for fun, one's for work. |

The alternative would be to keep my pristine '16 M3cp w/6MT and buy an X3M or X5M if my only option is Automatic Transmission. MB and certainly Kia aren't even on my radar.

After driving the M340 and experiencing the serious takeoff acceleration without a drop of lost traction, I can't imagine how the AWD M3 with the Auto will feel like with potentially 90 more horsepower and lighter weight. The F80 is already not a great car to launch with the manual - hopefully they improve that with the next generation given the additional power it will put out.

I spend 80% of my time in cities like New York and Beijing, 19% on congested highways, and 1% on race track. Therefore ZF 8AT is the best option for me; it is smooth and quick enough. I like the M5 because it has 4wd can be used as a family car, and I hope the new M3 will follow the same path.

6MT but not sold yet on the G
I saw a new 340M today parked next to F80CS. The new 3er looks big to me. Really big. It might be close to the F80 in actual dimensions but it looks bigger. I wonder how big, or not, it feels from behind the wheel. Rear end in person does not impress. The interior on the new car did look very nice. |
