Xdrive but ofc on summers and other issue is I will have 4 people in the car including me with our bags and there is no way I can fit my tires if I swap em out. So no choice but to drive back and pray it’s clear. Absolutely do not want to ship the car back (big reason doing the drive is to finish the break in service asap and also enjoy the car since waiting from March and memories with the friends and gf coming along) worst case find a hotel and let it pass by? I plan on spending the night in DC and/or NJ before I shoot over to MA. The reason I’m more worried is my car prior to this one was a 2018 cla45 amg and it was 4wd but still got totaled in mild winter conditions since I hit a patch of black ice on a turn going a bit faster then I should have. Really humbling exp and reminder 4wd dosent make you innvicible. I was on brands new all seasons. Ofc bmw xdrive will be much better traction system and this time I plan on rocking full proper winter tires. But yeah haven’t owned a car since January 2022 when this happened but yeah rant over stupid excited for my first bmw but really hope safe journey back!
Dang, thats a sweet ride esp with that paint/wrap combo. Im glad u are safe. Do u already have a set of winters ordered? What r u gonna do when u bring the car to MA? If you want winter and summer sets, its hard to do that with how hard it is to find the winters in OEM specs

Thank you!! Yeah it sucked cuz I just dropped a lot of money into and got the car wrapped and a bunch more work in October and it was totaled in January… didn’t even get a few months with it or let alone one summer… but dw the m3 is gonna revive the 2 faced look different colors though 👀. That’s insurance money blessed me with market rates back in January 🤩

Yeah I was gonna go with dealer offer sets but it’s like $4500 and don’t love the wheels… but there were a few options however my plan now is to do a 255/35/19x8.5 squared setup (since xdrive and I don’t wanna bother learning what the whole .1 ratio thing is plus squared setups are better in winter then staggered) on Michelin pilot alpin 5 (oem bmw winter tire choice for g80, but they use the front size of 275/35/19x9.5) also going with 255 over 275 since in winter smaller width is actually better for more pounds per square inch basically allowing it to grip better for better traction in snow and winter conditions vs in summer the wider the tire the better for more grip… science 🙃not locked into anything yet but not planning on buying this season and will look more into in the fall.

Then once I get back home, move my rears to my front wheels and mount the 295s on the back wheels.... and sell a set of 4 summer tires plus 2 AS tires (along with the set of 826m bicolor wheels). That's a lot of selling Currently I'm just planning to sell the 4 summers + set of 826m wheels once I get home. (I would have optioned the base 18/19" wheels had I decided on getting a new set of wheels earlier... but that's another story).

I'll weigh my options as I get closer - But current plan is to monitor weather every day, multiple times a day, and only drive in the daytime. I'll be spending a few days in SC after PCD while the car gets PPF installed. So this will likely be a week long trip including the 2-3 days to get home since I'm only driving daytime hours. It'll be a slow and steady trip home... but I guess since it's break-in miles, that works out. But let's see...
With common sense you will be fine...I grew up in Chicagoland on rear wheel drive with no snows in winter and people were just smarter about driving profiles in weather then...also better drivers! Haha

I grew up in this area driving 2wd pickup trucks (last one was a V8 manual ) with wide performance tires and no weight in the bed. It's safe to say I am EXTREMELY comfortable (and one might say, thoroughly enjoy ) driving down the street at a 45 degree angle--under complete control--especially after completing a turn.

But that was on All-seasons, which are low-grip in that scenario, but manageable if you know how to drive. Summers are a whole other animal altogether, about as close to zero-grip as you can get without actually lifting the entire vehicle off the road surface. The one time I got stuck driving my 335d on PSS in a tiny bit (like 1/16") of snow, on a main road with a very slight uphill grade (like 10 foot rise over the course of more than a mile), if I gave enough throttle to avoid slowing down, the back end started walking off the road. Had to go just short of that and hope I made it to the "top". When I got home, I parked in the driveway, and the car promptly slid right back out into the street.

I do agree about summers...a few years ago I pulled out of my downtown condo on the way to get snows put on my new RWD manual M3 and I barely could get it back to my parking spot on cold barely any snow day!

Thats the biggest concern. Imagine going up and down the mountain road on summers on a cold day at 50-60 mph. Even if u wanna drive slow, there will be semis coming at u all the time and u might cause a wreck. The whole I65 corridor was just lined by semis. Didnt have one stretch of the freeway that didnt have a semi on the right lane or one blocking the left lane trying to overtake at 50 mph and the whole left lane caravan braking and suddenly slowing down.

Just got the Michelin AS4s installed and perfectly happy for the half of the year it isn’t warm. We mostly get cold weather with the occasional snow here in Ohio so this made more sense for me. I’ve had these tires on other cars in the past and they have been great.

Did the same with my G83 end of October. Working like a charm!

My pirelli summers were starting to skip and hop whole backing out of parking spots and I chocked it up to being rock hard from the temperatures here! Glad I finally swapped them out. Now for the break in service in Monday!

Yep but if sticks to only driving when roads dry and maybe the sun out he should be ok if driving conservatively.

My 2008 Lexus IS350 RWD had Bridgestone Turanza R33 summer tires on it which I didn't bother to change out in the winters here in Chicago. On cold but dry days they were fine as long as I didn't do any spirited driving. It was only in snow/rain that they became dangerous. So I'm hoping for a similar experience with the summers on the G80. As long as I drive during daylight hours and keep away from rain/snow, I'm hoping I'll be fine for that drive home even through the mountains.

Amen brotha.
I drove home from college in a winter storm on yoko race tires on my pimpin Honda. If I can do that, you can drive in anything. Just be smart about your eqp and what ya got.

You’ll see more 4WD trucks in the ditch than cars

Aside from caution, can’t summer tires be damaged by driving them in cold temps?

That’s the word. They get hard as hockey pucks in cold weather. Driving on them can create a risk of cracking the sidewalls. This is not a common occurance though. Countless people (including someone I know) ignorantly ride on summer tires during the winter and nothing ever happens.

Im sure for folks like us that are aware of the risks and drive cautiously for one trip home will be just fine.

I will be on winters when I leave the dealer, but was curious. Mine was sitting in the -30 windchill temps at the dealer yesterday.

Anyone thinking of using a transport company?

Really want to drive the car back but with weather, costs of 1way flights, not sure it makes sense anymore
