Thank you for sharing. It's nice to be aware of what thieves can do today.

I haven't had my car long enough to look into where the relays are.
But with my Porsches I always took the fuel pump relays with me during overnight trips or if I had to leave the car in an area I wasn't comfortable.
Sometimes if I just feel like driving it to the movies I'll pull them.
Thieves don't have time to figure out why it won't start.

Not sure if all dealerships do this, however 10+ years ago when I was an ASE master Technician for Park Ave Acura & BMW, on the work order and on the customers copy, it shows the work performed, technician number and service advisor.

Til this day, when I get my BMW's serviced, it still shows this information on my signed copy. It's in the system, they can always look back and in some cases, go back many years of services.

I can't say with 100% this won't happen through Park Ave, (anything is possible), but i'm well known and friends with most there.

Just my 2 cents, maybe BMW should change their "New Key" policy, requiring the vehicle and owner to be present to order a key. Put in a loaner til the key comes in. I understand there will be an inconvenience to tow your vehicle to the dealership (if you're missing all keys), but it has to be better than walking out to your driveway and your vehicle is stolen and someone has your identity.

hey man one thing I did recently on my G80 is use ISTA to block out a lost key. If they did actually program a new key, ISTA will list all the keys in your cars memory and you can block any key you want.

Crazy. Does he actually need a friend on the inside though? Your license plate and VIN are in plain view on the outside of the car, and your address is likely on the front of your house. Not sure where your mail comes, but it’s not difficult for somebody to get your name and other details that way, or especially if you have some sort of online social media. That’s probably enough to make a fake reg & ID, does BMW require anything else to give out a key? I’m pretty sure BMW doesn’t have a copy of my ugly mug somewhere, how would they know it’s fake? Genuinely don’t know sounds like an exploitable flaw in the system

I spent a few seconds googling and these guys will apparently send you a genuine pre-programmed fob if you just email them a copy of your totally-legit ID and reg. Lol. I guess that is all it takes.

Sometimes i wish the laws here in NJ were like in TX. I don't think we would be having these sorts of problems. The issue with this particular case is how easy it is to fool a dealer to selling keys. Not sure broader gun rights will detour these clowns. I can only wonder how many cars are actively being stolen like this.

LOL, as a Tri-State NY-er now living in TX, broader gun rights wouldn't do squat. People break into cars and steal them all the time here too, except here, fools leave their cars unlocked and worse leave unsecured guns in their cars so those end up getting stolen as well.

So yeah, we got these same types of problems here too.

IMO, I think you're gonna find out that no one at the dealer got 'fooled' into giving out a set of keys. Someone is surely getting paid to make those keys and they know why they are making them. I'm glad you've got the cops involved, hope they run that end of things to ground.

To keep this "on topic", BMW really needs to see this and understand their vulnerability, lest they end up like Kia and being uninsurable because you can steal them with a USB drive.

This is crazy, but also a part of the reason I use a faraday bag and wheel/brake lock. Honestly though the real problem is how easy it was for them to make another key. Stay vigilant but ofc no car is worth your life.

HAHA! I wondered the same thing! I would blast a link to this to the dealers GM direct email if I was OP.

Back when a local Porsche dealer took my brand new at the time 2020 911 S for a one hour joy ride to drop off warranty paperwork to some offsite office in Orange, I sent the GM at the dealer a link to youtube where I had posted my dash cam (garmin mini, they didnt see it) video of the porter driving my car like an asshole. I got results REAL quick doing that.

Sorry you gotta deal with this, for now, until things are resolved with reprogramming the keys, or whatever you decide to do.

Currently, doesn’t seem to be a foolproof way to prevent a theft using any tools/devices/etc. Or is there one that I missed/hasn’t been brought up?

Of course, there’s always insurance in case it ever does happen, but, that’s not the ideal solution either. Lots of people have been through long waits to obtain one.

honestly just leave a note on the front of the window saying "ive been watching you try to steal my car for the past month, you will not get it so stop trying. i have multiple guns". so next time they come theyll see it andhopefully stop
